Channel Guide: Unpacking Our Obsession with Paranormal Investigation Shows

19 November 2011 7:00 AM, PST | | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Editor’s Note: We are very excited to welcome you to the relaunch of Channel Guide, our twice weekly column covering the world of television. Taking over the column are not one, but two talented ladies with a wealth of knowledge and wit. Every Saturday will feature a new essay from Amber Humphrey, a writer who has been with Fsr since 2009 and has, at every turn, impressed us with her unique voice. And now, on with the show… The title is super cryptic so I’ll explain the premise of Ghost Hunters for anyone who has somehow managed to escape its hypnotic appeal: Ghost Hunters is a reality show in which some dudes (Roto-Rooter plumbers turned paranormal experts) hunt ghosts. Really, though, saying that The Atlantic Paranormal Society (or Taps) “hunt ghosts” makes the series sound a lot more thrilling than it actually is. The paranormal investigators on Ghost Hunters, just »

Lizzie Borden took an ax ... to the Travel Channel

22 October 2011 12:46 AM, PDT | Zap2It - From Inside the Box | See recent Zap2It - From Inside the Box news »

Anyone who went through a phase in junior high and read every book they could find on the subject has an opinion on the case of Lizzie Borden.

The Fall River, Massachusetts spinster was accused of killing her father and stepmother with a hatchet in 1892. Borden was acquitted but that didn't keep her from being found guilty in popular opinion and a children's rhyme endures:

Lizzie Borden took an axe

And gave her mother forty whacks.

When she saw what she had done

She gave her father forty-one.

Her family home at 92 Second St. -- where the murders took place -- still stands and has been turned into a bed and breakfast. Of course, there are claims it's haunted.

Seeing as it's the season for it, Travel Channel's "Ghost Adventures" paid a visit. In the episode airing on Saturday, Oct. 22 Nick and Zak get a little more than they »

Episode 50 Is Hardly a Milestone: A Movie Review

7 October 2011 9:26 AM, PDT | 28 Days Later Analysis | See recent 28 Days Later Analysis news »

*spoiler alert.

Directors: Tess and Joe Smalley.

Writer: Ian Holt.

Cast: Josh Folan, Chris Perry, Natalie Wetta, Keithen Hergott, Eleanor Wilson.

Released to DVD: Sept 19, 2011

Episode 50 continues with the long tradition of inventing more paranormal reality television shows where private investigators meet an untimely end. This film even includes a short episode of a fake television show, "Paranormal Inspectors (Pi)," at the beginning just to show how this group functions in front of a camera. Jack Kelley (Josh Folan) and Damon Brown (Chris Parry), the founders, explain that ghosts are not real. They’re manufactured by natural causes, like the noxious fumes of improperly sealed cans of solvent, which play with a person’s imagination.

After the end credits roll for this short episode of "Paranormal Investigators," the real film kicks into high gear. The group is contacted by Andrew Worthington Jr. to investigate the West Virginia Insane Asylum. »

Grave Encounters and Stumbling Through a Paranormal Realm: A Movie Review and Preview

Director/writer: The Vicious Brothers.

Cast: Sean Rogerson, Juan Riedinger, and Ashleigh Gryzko.

*this title is scheduled to arrive on VOD / iTunes on Aug 25, 2011 and will be released on DVD, October 18, 2011.

The paranormal reality television genre has finally reached a point in where it can be grimly parodied. In the heights that this medium has reached, it is about time that these ghost hunters are getting a stab of the thorn. Grave Encounters gives a fictional group of ghost adventurers, lead by Lance Preston (Sean Rogerson), their just deserts. It is not wise to go adventuring into territory in where they will not be welcomed.

When they investigate Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital, the fate that Preston and his team end up in can best be described as taking the Kobayashi Maru test from “Star Trek II: Wrath of Kahn.” What they encounter tests both their character and resilience in a situation »

Comic-Con 2011 Recap: 158 Exclusive Interviews, 135 Stories, and 308 Videos

31 July 2011 12:48 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

It's been one full week since a billion sexy nerds descended upon San Diego for their annual Comic-Con event, which has become the premiere Hollywood launching pad for just about everything in the way of entertainment. This was a strange year, as no one property walked away from the grit, glitz, glamour, and geek sweat of the experience better for showing off its wares to what has become a very bored public.

It's true. If Comic-Con 2011 will be remembered for anything, it's the ennui that lingered around most attendees like the stench of the dead. They didn't want to be impressed, and even the Twihards stayed quiet when it came to their precious The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1. Maybe that's because, four years into the franchise, they know damn well what they're going to get. There was an enthusiastic showing, one of the biggest ever, for Glee's Hall H presentation. »

Creatures of the Night Beware! Ghost Trek to Screen at Fright Night Film Fest

"Ghost Trek" can best be described as "Reno 911" meets "Ghost Hunters", and the show's gang of misfits are out to prove that they're the funniest bunch of paranormal researchers since Peter Venkman, Raymond Stantz and Egon Spengler. Those of you lucky enough to be in the Louisville area of the Bluegrass State on Saturday, July 23rd, will get your chance to have a sneak peek at the pilot!

With a tagline that basically sums up the series ("Ghost Trek": Paranormal research with an emphasis on bad taste), the Paranormal Underworld Detective Society (that's right, Puds) is portrayed by an incredibly eclectic group of individuals. Actors, reality stars and former professional wrestlers are among the cast members, each bringing their own unique talent to the program.
