The "idiot plot" strikes again when Ridge and Brooke implausibly misunderstand each other
13 November 2008 | by (Chicago, Illinois) – See all my reviews

Brooke is baffled as to why Ridge is so angry with her. Now, suddenly, he's seriously questioning their relationship, asking why it's been so difficult for the two of them to stay together, why their relationship has had so many challenges and why the two of them aren't even married. He storms out. Brooke is confused and heartbroken. Little does she know that her son, Rick, edited the podcast of her speech, making it seem as though she heaped all her praise upon Rick and failed to even mention Ridge. Meanwhile, at the office, Eric and Stephanie discuss Ridge and Brooke. Stephanie scoffs when Eric claims that those two can weather any crisis. Elsewhere in the building, Taylor visits Rick in his new office - Ridge's former office.

So Ridge and Brooke quarrel because neither realizes her speech was altered. I think Roger Ebert called this kind of thing an "idiot plot," because the movie (or in this case, the newest crisis between Ridge and Brooke) would be over in ten minutes if everyone involved weren't an idiot.

Ridge and Brooke aren't exactly idiots. They're just the victims of the writers, who contrived to prevent either of them from stating the obvious. "I don't think I need to apologize," Brooke says to Ridge, "for saying warm, wonderful things about somebody that I love." She doesn't say "...about you" or even "...about the man I love." She says "...about somebody I love," awkwardly enough, which allows Ridge to misunderstand her to mean Rick. Meanwhile, Ridge never clearly states the obvious: "You didn't mention me in the podcast!" If he had said that, the misunderstanding would have been cleared up in ten seconds.

The storyline now between Ridge and Brooke is beautifully complicated. Unfortunately, the writers felt they had to keep it moving with an implausible contrivance.
