"Aki Fukaki" roughly translates to "Deep Autumn".

This movie is about an unlikely marriage of an ordinary teacher and a "hostess", girls who are hired to drink with men in certain high-end bars. Soon after marriage, the girl gets breast cancer, and has to remove both her breasts or die.

I really liked the cinematography and direction in this movie. This is one of those films that makes me want to visit Osaka.

This is supposed to be a sad movie, but it failed to move me because I just can't understand the motivation behind the two main characters. I know the girl must be really proud of her breasts, and want to fight to keep them, but is it really so important to die for? When the doctor told the protagonist that her conditions are getting worse and she must have an operation immediately, why couldn't he just walk up to her and say "It's not your breast I fell in love with, it's you... let's live long and go to the grave together like we promised" if he really loved her instead of horse racing gambling to buy a magical pot? The story just seem to be too forced for me.

This movie was apparently based on two novels by the same author. "Akifukaki" and "Keiba" (horse racing). I felt the horse racing and jealousy sections were far too long and failed to really contribute to the story other than showing what a pathetic man the main character was.

This movie was supposed to be sad, but it failed to move me. However, there were a LOT of funny scenes that made me burst out laughing. The story was a complete failure for me, but this is an entertaining film.
