Very Good Featurette

A Natural Born World-Shaker: Making 'Cool Hand Luke' (2008)

*** 1/2 (out of 4)

Very good making-of featurette clocking in at just under thirty-minutes only suffers from not having Paul Newman interviewed. Director Stuart Rosenberg, screenwriter Frank Pierson, Newman biographer Eric Lax, George Kennedy, Ralph Waite, Donn Pearce, Clifton James and Lou Antonio are just a few of the people who are interviewed about the making of this legendary classic. Rosenberg and Pierson talk about the early stages of the film when it was going to originally be shot by Columbia but they refused when the writer wouldn't change the ending. They talk about taking the picture to Warner who agreed to let them keep the ending and then we get into the casting of the picture. Other stories told in detail deal with the famous egg sequence, the car wash and then the banjo/singing that was done by Newman towards the end of the production. Several cast members are seen here and it's funny how each of them constantly has a smile on their face as they re-live these stories as it's very clear that all of them enjoy working on the film and there's no question that they're all happy with the end result. Some of the best stories happen when everyone starts to take guesses at how many eggs Newman really ate. Kennedy also talks about winning the Oscar and of course everyone shares what it was like working with Newman. Fans of the film are really going to enjoy this even with the one person missing.
