The Gadarene Swine (2011)
Based on Actual Events, The Gadarene Swine is a modern-day parable that explores the consequences of keeping our demons locked inside of us. Told through three thematically connected vignettes, the movie graphically shows how our personal demons destroy lives - not only our own, but the lives of those around us. These compelling and heart-wrenching tales will force you to ask yourself: "what demons am I holding onto?"- Written by Pub.
The Gadarene Swine is a modern-day parable that explores the consequences of keeping our personal demons locked inside of us. With The Gadarene Swine, director Brian Smolensky experimented with narrative structure. The film has three acts, however, the way in which these sections interact is unusual. The audience experiences a Three Act Structure; however, not three acts from the same story. While each act deals with a same theme (what we do with our inner demons) and has a similar tone, they are independent vignettes with separate characters and problems. This narrative experiment gets more complex as each vignette is from the corresponding act of that story. This means the first short, "My Hero," is Act One of that narrative. The second, "Hush Little Baby," is Act Two from that story. And the third, "Gadarene Swine," is the final act from that story line as well as the final act of the film itself. Instead of following characters through a three act arc, the audience follows actors. Taking a cue from his time in the theatre, Brian Smolensky sought to give this film the feel of A Night of One-Acts from the ensemble of a repertory theatre company (granted a rather macabre one). To this end, the same small group of actors portray all the characters. The actors are specifically recast in each vignette to allow them to complete an arc over the course of the three stories. Also making a three-act transformation is the set. The same location (a double-wide trailer) is used as the home of the main character in each short film. The crew remodeled and redecorated it for each story. As the film and it's characters deteriorate, so do their surroundings. The Gadarene Swine is a dark, disturbing, and experimental narrative feature that won the Best Feature Award at this years Queens World Film Festival in New York.- Written by I & Y Productions
