Pop Skull (DVD Review)

This unnerving slice of pill-popping, acid-tripping Midwestern life (now on DVD from Halo-8) feels like August Strindberg’s Dream Play filtered through the mind of retro-modern surrealists like The Manson Family’s Jim VanBebber and Julien Donkey-boy’s Harmony Korine. But filmmaker Adam Wingard leaps beyond even those cinematic transgressors in terms of stripping away narrative conventions, to the point where Pop Skull is less a narrative than a disaffected meditation by a depressed 20something pill addict, Daniel (played by perpetually spooked-out Lane Hughes, who also scripted with Wingard and E.L. Katz).

There’s no easy genre classification handy for this film. Even to describe it as “experimental” seems like a misnomer, since that implies certain art-house trappings—the movie feels more like flipping through the pages of a troubled young man’s diary, so “personal cinema” is an easy label. Weekly DVD & Blu-Ray Chopping List 7.28.2009

While there are no mainstream horror releases this week, it's a Huge week for fans of under-the-radar titles, vintage frights, indie and international horror.

There's quite a few re-issues, some titles hitting Blu-ray for the first time, and several collections hitting stores. Below the jump you can view the full list of genre DVD & Blu-Ray titles arriving tomorrow, Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 in this weekly version of the famous Fangoria Chopping List - updated with all the last minute additions and deletions.

Assorted horror DVD & Blu-Ray news

IFC Films gave Fango an update on when a quartet of its horror titles will debut as Blockbuster exclusives and then become available for retail via Mpi.  Look for The Objective (at Blockbuster July 14) to retail on October 27; Pontypool (Blockbuster Oct. 13) to retail February 10, 2010; Dead Snow (Blockbuster Oct. 20) to retail January 26, 2010; and Dark Mirror (no Blockbuster date as of yet) to retail March 2010.

Meanwhile, the two Blu-ray set of the complete theatrical cut of the Weinstein Company’s Grindhouse (which we previously reported on here) has now been shifted to a street date of December 31 by Wal-Mart, which appears to be the only retailer offering it at the moment. That’s the slot the company has also set for a three-dvd Grindhouse edition—but since that’s a Thursday, and discs usually street on Tuesdays, could that just be a default date?
