After her display at the fancy dress party, Lillie finds herself being shunned by society. Bertie is obviously upset and she finds that several dinner invitations have been withdrawn. All seems forgiven when Lillie appears in a tableau of a J.E. Millais painting. Edward goes to Ireland to check on his property and collect the rents but returns empty handed with the Irish in revolt against any English landlord. A local scandal sheet reports that Edward has filed for divorce citing Bertie and Edward decides to sue for libel. Prince Louis of Battenberg, the Prince of Wales' nephew, falls in love with Lillie and she with him. He asks her to marry him but when his Uncle Bertie hears of it, he flatly refuses permission. Lilly learns that her father has been forced to leave Jersey owing to a scandal. With no money, Lillie thinks she will have to get a job, perhaps in the theater. Something unexpected comes her way however.
