Undead School Girls, Part 1
14 July 2011 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

Going in, I didn't expect much from Corpse Princess. I thought it to just another, girls in school outfits fighting something. In the end thats what you get but its more than that.

The story is that theirs a unknown world of undead existing right along with ours. Creatures known as Shikabane roam the landscape and attack humans. These creatures are former humans who died with intense regret and can't deal with being dead. To combat this a group of monks use creatures known as Shikabane Hime. They are Shikabanes who can be controlled and they need 108 kills to gain access to heaven. And of course this outfit of trained killers are big breasted, scantily clad teenage girls(did you really expect anything else)that team up with monks to kill the undead. While the concept of a human fighting along side some other creature is by no means a new thing, though the background for it all is original enough to keep it from becoming another mindless anime.

In the middle of all this theirs Makina Hoshimura and her contracted monk Keisei Tagami, along with his adopted brother Ouri Kagami. Keisei is the most likable one and is our main comic relief. Ouri is decent but often comes off as annoying because he can't seem to mind his own business. Makina though comes off as a bitch most of the time and takes her job very seriously. I understand she had a lot of bad stuff happen to her but even Lucy from Elfen Lied and Beatrix Kiddo of Kill Bill had nice sides. But in the end you'll feel for Makina and her plight. Thiers quiet a few other characters(too much for me to describe) that will keep your interest as well.

As much as I enjoyed the series if suffered from a lot of problems. For one a lot of it lacks common sense. One is that Shikabanes can be killed by a bullet to the brain, yet for some reason only Shikabane Himes can kill them. Why a human can't kill one is beyond me. Another one is that Monks and their Shikabanes can't have relations, yet they still pare the undead teenagers with young men, yeah theirs not going to be any sexual tension with that. Its also explained how Shikabanes are made over seven times ! I got it the first time you don't need to bring it up every episode !. In most episodes we get a short recap on what happened in the last episode, but its the last scenes from the episode we just watched so I found it a little unnecessary. Thiers quiet a few more problems but it harms the series very little especially when you get sucked in and forget about it.

To my surprise the series lacked a lot violence and nudity. Although you do get a lot of cleavage and blood splatter but nothing over the top.

The final product is a good package. The animation was good. The dubbing was also good but the dialog wasn't very strong, they say the word Shikabanes enough to have a drinking game. The season like its episodes end in a cliff hanger, so watching the next season is a must. Seeing that its free to watch on youtube I wouldn't pass this one up.
