Speculations about Specky
21 February 2010 | by (Ambrosia) – See all my reviews

Barbie is away, so her cousin Linda ( Jumoke Debayo ) has moved into the Reynolds house to help out.

At the hospital, Joan and Dr.Wilson ( Mary Macleod ) exchange gossip concerning a local woman who got pregnant courtesy of a window cleaner. Bill overhears this, and thinks she is confessing that Eddie is not the father of her baby. He tells Linda ( as well as Arthur and Jacko ), and they have a good laugh about it.

The window cleaner in Maple Terrace is one Specky Nuttall ( Eric Francis ), who looks like a refugee from 'Last Of The Summer Wine'.

Bill tries to break the news gently to Eddie, but he mistakenly thinks Bill is confiding in him the news that he is not the father of Barbie's child...

Nina Baden-Semper does not appear in this episode, hence her temporary replacement by Jumoke Debayo, who notched up a long list of credits in British television around this time. It is obvious that her lines were originally intended for Nina.

Bill's willingness to accept Joan's 'infidelity' does not paint him in a particularly good light. His eagerness to spread the malicious rumour puts him on a par with 'Hylda Ogden' from 'Coronation Street'.

Funniest moment - a mix-up at the supermarket results in Eddie and Bill getting each other's groceries. Finding a tin of cat food, thick-as-two-planks Eddie thinks it means Bill likes to eat cats. He tells Arthur and Jacko this, just as Bill walks in carrying Nobby's moggy. "What did I tell you?", says Eddie. "He's brought his dinner with him!".
