It's not all that bad but not one that will grow on you.

Like many others have already said, this movie had a lot of potential and failed to live up to it. That's not to say that it's a terrible film (far from it) but it is a bit of a disappointment when compared to what it could have been.

There's an interesting intro/opening sequence briefly covering a scientific breakthrough utilising parasites on Cuttyhunk Island before things take an inevitable downturn. We then skip forward some years to join a group of standard young American adults (Mircea Monroe, Christopher Shand, Brian Krause and Nora Kirkpatrick) who are on their way to . . . . . Cuttyhunk Island. You can probably guess what gets to rear it's ugly little head (or numerous ugly little heads, to be more specific) once more.

Growth has some good moments here and there. It's got an enjoyable premise that could lead to any number of great scenes, hinting at numerous genre touchstones from The Wicker Man to The Fly, but what it chooses to do, instead, is to insult the viewer's intelligence with a number of dumb moments of drawn out drama involving characters we don't really care for played by actors that can't elevate the mediocre material.

Writer-director Gabriel Cowan does everything well, from a directorial standpoint, but sadly lets himself down with the plotting, script and characters used. The effects are all well done and the few moments of genuine tension almost lift the movie but it's swiftly brought down again by the other elements acting as dead weight. It's entertaining enough, and even thrilling in a few places, but it could/should have been so much better.
