A below-the-average episode of an above-the-average series
13 July 2009 | by (Finland) – See all my reviews

The first three episodes of Crash set up a world that I could believe in. Thanks to this episode, I am now unable to suspend my disbelief. Why? Because of the inconsistent portrayal of the characters inhabiting the world of Crash. It's all because of the Neve-Campbell-in-Wild-Things Syndrome (if no one has coined this term I hereby claim the credit). In Wild Things, there was a supposedly "hot" threesome between Matt Dillon, Denise Richards and Neve Campbell (What happened to her career, by the way? Couldn't care less.). But, as you may know, because of Neve Campbell's "no nudity" clause in her contract, the whole scene was filmed so jarringly (in order to adhere to aforementioned clause) that it ruined the whole scene and nearly the whole movie, which was actually better than a mere sexploitation-movie-with-major-stars. The Neve Campbell Syndrome features prominently in this episode: Ines (Moran Atias) is having sex with her clothes, namely top and a mini-skirt, on and we see nothing but the butt of the male character. Later, Ben (Dennis Hopper in reliable nut-head mode) is having a party with several topless ladies, who are mere extras (with the exception of the character of Denise). I just can't believe in a world with such contradictions. Make no mistake: I did not start to watch this show expecting naked lead actors. If the nudity is not consistent, why bother with any? The Neve-Campbell-in-Wild-Things Syndrome is quite widespread where there should not be any (ie. outside American network TV). All probably because actresses don't want to be labeled as willing to drop their clothes. Stupid. Watch some non-American TV - nudity does not equal inability to be a credible actress! To make things worse, the episode is the first to drop below the average, with no major turns or revelations.
