The wheel of television drama has come full circle as live plays are broadcast again

In just over a week’s time live drama returns to British television with the launch of a five-week season of new plays that will be seen across the land at exactly the moment they are performed in the BBC’s Pebble Mill studio in Birmingham. Starting with the Battle of Waterloo, by Keith Dewhurst, the season continues with specially commissioned plays from Fay Weldon, Bernard Kops, Stephen Davis — whose Busted was shown on BBC-2 last Friday — and Michael Wall.

Only Wall’s play will not be truly live: it is already on tape, done as a pilot run to remind everyone how to do it. We are assured, however, that it too was produced in “live” conditions, with no stops, no retakes, and all the pressure of a real-time performance.
