Plot Summary

  • After Tess is refused a graveyard burial for her child, she leaves home and becomes a milkmaid. The surprising perk of the job is the presence of Angel Clare, son of a parson. He is learning the farm trade there, planning to emigrate, his parents are planning to set him up overseas. The true gentleman is the dream of all the girls, but only has eyes for Tess. She is as smitten after accidentally seeing him sleeping in the buff. He braves his mother's objections to wanting to marry a girl beneath the family's station, unlike Mercy Chant. Tess, at first, dares not accept on account of Mercy, a colleague and her past. As he doesn't object to her true genealogy, she reconsiders. Only when they are packed to leave, she discovers her last letter of confidences wasn't opened.

  • Tess gives birth to a baby boy but he soon dies and is refused a Christian burial by the Parson Tringham. She decides to leave home and gets work as a milkmaid. She enjoys her life there and meets Angel Clare, who takes an immediate liking to her. Angel has dreams of going to South America and establishing his own farm. Deciding that Tess is the life partner he desires he travels home to get his parents' permission to marry. The Reverend and Mrs. Clare are good and caring parents and despite their misgivings about Angel marrying below his station, they agree. While home however, he makes the acquaintance of Alec D'Uberville and take a dislike to the man. Tess gladly accepts his proposal of marriage but when she hears of his encounter with Alec, decides she must tell him the truth about her past.
