Antonio de la Torre,
Mature people are often thought as being without a sex life. In reality, as long as there is desire, there is a possibility of finding a fulfilling sexual relation with partners in the same age group, which seems to be what Spanish filmmaker Laura Mana set out to prove in this sunny and funny comedy that dares to delve in a subject not many others would touch with a ten foot pole. After all, the film industry, worldwide, caters to younger viewers, neglecting a majority of movie goers who are past their prime in the sex department.
A Barcelona school catering to seniors is at the center of the story. One of the classes try to solve the problems seniors are facing by reintroducing them to something most of them have given for granted. By awakening their dormant libidos, Olga, the teacher, wants them to be bold and daring, finding a way to enjoy something that comes as naturally as sex. Olga's class includes some septuagenarians that greatly appreciate what they learn in ways of techniques long forgotten.
The greatest success in the story is that one of Herminia and Julian. She is a widow living with her daughter, one of those persons seen in insets in the news broadcast translating for a deaf audience. Herminia is still full of life. A chance meeting with Julian, an Argentine just recently arrived in Barcelona and living with his son and his family. Julian's dream as a younger man was a woman with large breasts. He finds not only that in Herminia, but also love equally returned by her.
Ms. Mana shows great insight in the way she stages her film, which was written by Alicia Luna in collaboration with the director. Sonsoles Benedicto and Osvaldo Santoro have some sweet moments together. Pilar Bardem, Eduardo Blanco, Rosa Maria Sarda, and the other supporting players contribute to make this a pleasant occasion. The film ends up with a bang, literally, as a collective orgasm from different sources are seen and heard at the same time.
