One of the best of 2008's Duke City Shootout
23 September 2008 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

I've seen a lot of independent short films in my time, but this one has to be by far one of the best ones, ever. With a pretty professional look, a story that kills, and all sorts of sneaky ways of winning over your heart, "Assassin Emeritus" will knock you flat with humor.

Old Frank Burke is depressed. He's about to turn 80, he has no friends... and he pines away for the days of old when he could kill people with a pack of chiclitz for the CIA. After confessing to a priest for the 8th time in a month, plus a funeral of one of his old coworkers, Frank decides to get wasted, only to find himself with one last job. Surprises are around the corner as Frank attempts to get his 80-year-old frame back and working in the old job of killing people.

The thing with most short films is, you either don't know where they're going because they waste time, or they try to shove a lot in with limited resources. Time is completely forgotten in this 12 minute narrative. This is the type of movie anyone would like to sit down and watch, only it's much shorter than feature length. It has all the buttons and all the excitement, too.

I'm hoping Kevin Napier has some other tricks behind his full-body black suit. Storytelling like this, with a limited budget and time, is something special.
