The script for this movie was originally picked up by New Line Cinema, with the intention to rewrite it as a sequel to Se7en (1995), tentatively titled Ei8ht. The main character was supposed to be Se7en's Detective William Somerset who had acquired psychic powers. This idea was dropped after Se7en director David Fincher reacted negatively to the idea, after which it was produced as a stand-alone film.
After spending close to two years in the Warner Bros. vault, the film was bought Relativity Media to release in the US. However, they never released it due to their bankruptcy, and it was sold again to Lionsgate Premiere.
The film was scheduled for a late 2015 release, but the film's US distributor - Relativity Media - encountered financial trouble and put off the release. Even after the company emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the film has yet to be released in the US. ** NOTE: The film was released last Friday (12/16/2016); however, the studios who bought the US rights (from Relativity Media) Grindstone Entertainment and Lionsgate Films only had a " Limited Relelease" on that day in the US. Exactly 6 days layer, it was released via streaming on the Internet through the usual outlets (which shall go nameless). Unfortunately, it is still unavailable on disc (DVD or Bluray) in North America (aka "Region 1")
