This Week on DVD: Race to Witch Mountain, The Soloist, Flight of the Conchords: Season 2

4 August 2009 9:08 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Kind of a forgettable week for DVD shopping, with the exception of a couple of cool TV and Blu-ray releases. Big name titles hitting store shelves include Disney's Race to Witch Mountain starring The Rock, catfight thriller Obsessed starring Ali Larter and Beyonce Knowles, plus The Soloist starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx. There's also the indie Michael Chabon adaptation The Mysteries of Pittsburgh and low budget action/sci-fi flick Mutant Chronicles, plus the Lindsay Lohan direct-to-dvd comedy Labor Pains. Uhh... yeah. Save your money for the dry Kiwi comedy of Flight of the Conchords: Season 2 or the trippy outrageousness of Tim & Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! Season 3, plus Big Trouble in Little China on Blu-ray. Race to Witch Mountain [1] (DVD, Blu-ray [2]) Obsessed [3] (DVD, Blu-ray [4]) The Soloist [5] (DVD, Blu-ray [6]) The Mysteries of Pittsburgh [7] (DVD, Blu-ray [8]) Mutant Chronicles [9] (DVD, Blu-ray [10]) Delgo [11] Labor Pains [12] (DVD, Blu-ray [13]) Fragments [14] The Chaos Experiment [15] You Must Remember This »

DVD releases for August 4, 2009

4 August 2009 8:58 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Have I mentioned how much I love Magnolia lately? Not only do they release some of our favorite films on DVD, but they go to extreme lengths to make those DVD's fanboy centric. Take The Mutant Chronicles for example. Not only did Magnolia pick up Simon Hunter's mostly misunderstood little scifi epic for distro (interview with Hunter), but they gave it a 2-disc Director's Cut and loaded it with documentaries and commentaries galore. That's what I'm talking about.

This week also marks the release of another overdue epic, the Russian fantasy film Wolfhound. This one's about two years coming so I'm very much looking forward to giving it a spin.

Of course how could we forget to mention Jaimie Blanks' remake of the classic Australian 70s cult film, Long Weekend (review). It's been retitled Nature's Grave in the states so keep an eye out for Jim Cavizel's face covered »

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: August 4, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these. The Soloist The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it. Mutant Chronicles This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that. Race to Witch Mountain Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may »

DVD Release List: August 4, 2009: Trapped in a Chaos Experiment with Hot Blood Sundae Cravings

3 August 2009 10:25 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

If you've upgraded your system to include a Blu-ray player, then this is a pretty good week for you as August 4th will see the release of a few old friends including Blade II, Hannibal Rising, and Mimic. On the newer end of the spectrum, we have sci-fi/horror hybrids Alien Uprising and The Mutant Chronicles along with watch-it-at-your-own-risk fare like Cravings, The Chaos Experiment, Nature's Grave, and the anthology Slices.

If you have kids (or even if you don't), then Daffy Duck's Quackbusters is a must buy along with the Evil Christmas duo of Psycho Santa and Satan Claus. Once the kiddies are tucked safely in bed, then you'll want to pop in Hot Blood Sundae, which garnered a site record three different scores from Foy in his review, depending on how you choose to watch the flick. Rounding things out is 1982's Trapped, starring cult favorite Henry Silva. »

Big Names Lined up for Thriller Tribes of October

5 May 2009 7:03 PM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Well, if this casting line-up doesn’t impress you, then I am not sure what will!

The Hollywood Reporter announced today that Ray Stevenson (pictured), Jaime King and Stephen Moyer, along with Robert Duvall and James Caan, will star in a new post-apocalyptic thriller called Tribes of October. Tribes is being helmed by Philippe Martinez, who is also producing the film.

THR described Tribes of October as a film set in a future in which New York has become surrounded by an endless desert plagued by heat storms, and the city's technology is such that nothing made after 1960 works anymore. In this environment, a detective (Stevenson) goes after a Mafia don (Caan) who is going after the remnants of the NYPD, led by Duvall. The detective is simultaneously searching for the love of his life (King). Moyer plays a cynical and street-smart detective.

Filming should start sometime during the summer in Michigan. »
