Nicolas Winding Refn-produced Maniac Cop remake set to move ahead

25 March 2017 3:40 PM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the planned remake of William Lustig’s cult slasher Maniac Cop, but now Variety is reporting that the project is officially moving forward, with financing secured and principal photography set to take place in Los Angeles this summer.

Maniac Cop is being directed by John Hyams (Universal Soldier: Regeneration) from a script by Ed Brubaker (Captain America: The Winter Soldier), while Nicolas Winding Refn (The Neon Demon) is producing. Original director Lustig is also on board as a creative producer.

The new film is set in the present and follows a determined female L.A. police officer who sets out to reveal the truth about the brutal murders of innocent people by one of her fellow cops. Unlike the original horror, the remake is being described as “a contemporary and realistic action thriller.”

Released in 1988, the original Maniac Cop »

Even if they don’t hold the same clout as, say, Stallone and Schwarzenegger, Van Damme and Lundgren are two names that are often revered in Hollywood’s action scene, and over the years fans have lapped up their on-screen battles in the likes of Universal Soldier and its widely derided sequel, Universal Soldier: Regeneration.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren will be on the same side for the first time in their action filled careers, with the two almost-iconic action stars will co-star in the upcoming action thriller Black Water. The screenplay was written by Chad Law and the search is on for a director to steer the project.

In it, Van Damme will play a deep-cover agent in deep waters: he's being held in a prison that the CIA runs on, of all places, a submarine. There's no word on Lundgren’s character, but we assume he'll be able to tread water.
