I just recently finished viewing Tony Swansey's film Squeal and overall I must say I was impressed. By no means is this a classic in the city folk caught in the middle of redneck hell horror genre, however it delivers quite well on the suspense with some well choreographed fight scenes between the band mates and the hogs. There is also that impending dread with the main giant hog looking to breed with the ladies that did it for me.
With a title like Squeal your probably wondering about the tone of the film and I can tell you it's played as straight horror for the most part with little humor besides some early bickering between the band members before the mutants come into play. Nothing is really revealed about the creatures origins besides the basic experiment gone wrong set up. It is unclear whether these creatures were created from scratch splicing DNA or whether they started out as human beings.
Not that an explanation is necessary but I would personally like to see a follow up or perhaps even a prequel setting up the events in this film. I think there has now been enough films of this type to coin a new phrase Hogsploitation. If you enjoy this you may also want to check out Razorback, Pig Hunt, and Dr. Moreau's House Of Pain which also features a horny pig/human mutant. The makeup is solid although it's basically just a human being with a pig's nose so no heavy makeup. They still come off as intimidating and much more effective then a crappy cgi heavy SyFy original. There is also a female mutant that really isn't used much beyond a brief gratuitous porking scene. I can't lie I really wanted to see more of that then was on display LOL.
Overall I was pleasantly surprised and just so everyone reading this knows I am not connected with the film in any way. This is my first review under my new email but more unrelated reviews are on the way.I have a library of over eight thousand films and watch numerous obscure films especially in the horror, sci-fi, cult genres. I've found the growing issue of filmmakers flooding this site with bias reviews disgusting. At least be upfront about it as I will be if my film acting debut ever receives a wide DVD release.
