Radar
The segment on this episode with the commercial pilot who claims an unidentified object came up under his plane within 100 ft. sounds like it could be his imagination. All commercial planes have a constant vertical radar which provides pilot altitude readings at any given moment. In this case, the plane was at 35,000 so the instrument should have indicated exactly that- 35,000 feet. However, pilot claims vertical radar indicated an unidentified object coming up on this plane within 100 feet of a possible collision.
My question is this: why didn't the pilot disclose in this segment if air traffic control (ATC) or satellite radar saw anything in the plane's vicinity? Sort of an important piece of information to leave out of the segment, isn't it? If nothing was there on ATC radar, then why would the plane's vertical radar bouncing down on the object work but ATC or satellite radar not work??? Something seems very fishy with this pilot's claim.
