Sam again reviles his NYPD colleagues' ease in accepting 'liberalities' from crime baron Elliott Casso, whom Hunt considers an invaluable source. Unease becomes despair when Sam finds out Ruth Tyler, his mother, already caring for him as a small boy, is working for the scum to pay off a loan-shark debt. Worse, she refuses his help although an earlier recruited 'working girl', who was sent to him with a double dirty agenda, is murdered for disobedience.
