- The ladies pull a disappearing act for this week's challenge.
- As the girls head back from panel, they reflect on their critiques at judging. Sheena is worried because they told her she wasn't "modelesque" and Elina is frustrated because the judges told her she still needs to let go, even though she broke down and cried at the last challenge. She feels her European upbringing is to blame. Marjorie empathizes with her... but she is the only one. Samantha cuts her off and says, "But you guys moved here when you are eight. Didn't you have 11 years to adapt to America's style?"
Elina is shocked by her statement. As she tears up, she cries, "Do you understand how hurtful that is? Don't you think I have dealt with this my whole life?" Though Elina is finally showing her true feelings, it's lost on the girls. Sheena cuts in and asks the girls if they are happy in America, and tells them, "you are only an immigrant in your mind."
Joslyn does not have time to get involved in the fight. She's starting to get sick and is worried that it will affect her performance this week.
Tyra Mail: Work it, sell it, own it. Love Tyra.
Time for the challenge. The girls arrive at the Game Room and meet Ron and Richard Harris, the twirling twins. They are here to teach how to work with accessories. The twins take turns showing the girls how to move with scarves, handbags, and hats. Then they get to try on their own. McKey is up first with a cap that she twirls on her finger. Twin #1 shows her how to work a hat with grace and style. Sheena is next, with a scarf that she swishes around her neck as she dances across the room. Joslyn demonstrates how to take a handbag from day to night. Marjorie has a wraparound skirt, but she has trouble figuring out how to put it on. One of the twins shows her to twirl to take the skirt both on and off. He tells her, "modeling is about simplicity."
Now it's time to put them to the test. Someone comes out from behind the curtain covered from head to to in a green spandex suit, with a short red dress over it. Next to them, there's a TV. As the green model struts across the room, striking a pose, on the screen all you can see are the clothes, much like an invisible man. Finally, the invisible model is revealed. No, it's not Benny Ninja, but James St. James, freak show author and fashion provocateur. He tells the girls they will all be wearing a "green screen suit" and modeling clothes for Petro Zillia's invisible model collection. He introduces the designer/owner of Petro Zillia, Nony Tochterman.
Ann Shoket is back as a judge. She tells the girls the winner will appear in a holiday fashion and accessory story in the December/January issue of Seventeen magazine. They start the show.
When she pulls the screen suit mask over her face, Elina immediately starts to get claustrophobic. But as soon as she hears the music, she's fine. She dances around the stage with ease. McKey is up next, wearing a long, flowing skirt. She wanted to show how free-flowing the skirt could be, but it came off looking a bit awkward. Ann remarked, "That's not what the dress is supposed to look like."
Marjorie came out next wearing a skin tight dress. Only she didn't notice that her top had fallen down. Luckily she was invisible so she was not exposed, but the designer was very upset that she wasn't able to showcase the dress properly. Analeigh managed to keep her dress on, and also worked with her pearls, impressing Ann.
Samantha is wearing a skirt with a short sleeve blazer and wanted to show how versatile her jacket can be. But she struggles to both take it off, and then put it on. Nony was not happy. "You would never, on a runway, take a jacket off and put it back on."
Joslyn doesn't do much better. She takes the belt off her dress to make it look like a necklace, but it looked more like a strip show. And finally, Sheena comes twirling out to show the ruffles on her dress but she never stops and poses. Nony looks like she's about to scream.
After giving mostly negative critique, Ann reveals that Elina wins the challenge. She chooses Marjorie and Analeigh to join her in the fashion spread. Samantha is pissed. "I can't believe she won, because she hates holidays. She's an atheist! I love Christmas, I'd love to do it."
Elina, Analeigh, and Marjorie head over to their holiday shoot, but as they get dolled up it feels more New Year's Eve than Christmas. Elina is rocking a blue dress with purple shoes, Analeigh is wearing an orange dress with animal print accessories, and Marj is decked out in black and white.
Tyra Mail: A well-read model is always prompt. Love, Tyra.
Back at the house, Joslyn is still feeling sick. The girls are gathered in the kitchen eating. When Sheena puts teriyaki sauce on her food, Samantha responds to her in a mock "Asian" accent. Analeigh tells her to watch it because her teasing can be a bit offensive. Sheena shoots back that she's Asian and she's not offended. Marjorie gives Elina a look, and then Sheena pounces.
It turns into a full-on fight, mostly with Sheena yelling that they have been acting different since the fight on the bus. Elina tells them she was offended by their comments, but Sheena tells her she needs to "grow out of it," and stop blaming it on being European. Then she jumps over to the fact that Elina won the challenge, and asks her, if as an atheist, she felt conflicted appearing in a holiday fashion spread. Without blinking Elina says no, and Sheena calls her a hypocrite. Although Elina tries to explain, Sheena just gets louder and louder. Elina and Marjorie fight back the European way. Stoic, a few eye rolls, while looking at each other in disbelief.
The next morning, Sheena and Elina stomp through the kitchen without speaking. Sheena said it feels like the competition has come down to good versus evil. Joslyn wakes up feeling worse than the day before. But although she is sick, she's determined to perform well.
The girls head out to the shoot. When they arrive, they find Mr. Jay and Whitney, last year's winner. She tells the girls they'll be doing a CoverGirl commercial. And because there is such a history on ANTM of the models flubbing their lines, they will get to use a teleprompter. Frank Ockenfels will direct.
Samantha is up first. She gets through her lines pretty well. Mr. Jay thinks she brought her genuine energy to the set. He's impressed. Elina is next. She looks great, but it feels like she's reading her lines. Jay tells her it feels too controlled and she responds, "I'm so tired of hearing that." But it's true. She tries another take, but it still comes off feeling a bit forced.
McKey also looks great but she doesn't have a clue on set. She missed her mark with almost every take. Jay remarked, "Clueless does not make a CoverGirl." Analeigh is a natural. She does each take with ease, and Mr. Jay notes how he felt like she it felt like she was having a conversation with him. "She was believable and when she speaks she becomes way more beautiful than a snapshot."
Marjorie is up next. She gets through her lines but, of course, comes off as very nervous. When Mr. Jay gives her feedback, she gets overwhelmed again. He warns her that he usually has to coddle her and by now, she should be able to stand on her own.
Sheena gets through the shoot with ease. The director is very impressed with her style and noted, "Every motion had a fluid point to it. And you didn't feel it all like she was stopping or falling over her words."
Right before Joslyn is up, she throws up. A nice assistant holds back her hair as she gets sick. When she gets on set, she tries to overcompensate by being cheery, but it doesn't translate to film.
Time for Panel. Frank Ockenfels is here as the judge.
Tyra announces that there will be a walking test and pulls out a pair of wooden clogs for the girls to showcase. After the challenge, Tyra tells the girls it's especially important to know how to walk in wooden clogs because they are going to.... Amsterdam! But, not everyone is going. Time to judge the commercial.
Samantha is up first. Tyra scolds her for not doing better, even though she had the teleprompter. Frank tells her to enunciate her words more. Marjorie looks great, but tell her she was going must to fast. They all love Analeigh. Tyra raves that it's the best commercial in the history of ANTM. Frank points out she was the only one to use the product.
Joslyn is next. Tyra is impressed that she couldn't tell she was sick, but they felt she was over the top. For Elina, Frank notes her performance is like a closed fist (heard that before) and Nigel reminds her of the importance of eye contact. Sheena's commercial was very natural but Ms. Jay teased she looked like she was about to do "the snake." McKey is last and they think she looks gorgeous but would prefer if she didn't open her mouth. Ouch.
And here's the order:
Analeigh is called first. Sheena. Samantha. Marjorie. McKey.
The final two: Elina and Joslyn. As Tyra says her speech, Samantha and Sheena, softly chant, "Joslyn, Joslyn, Joslyn."
"Two very interesting girls, very different girls. One who took fantastic, strong pictures and then kind of started to falter a bit. And another who took strong pictures but the judges don't think she is translating to moving pictures. So who goes home?"
Before revealing, Tyra notes the girls both have a strength. Elina's strength is a strength that is in desperate need of control. And for Joslyn, her strength is that she could be so sick, but still perform, so it shows she is a survivor. As she turns the picture, Tyra says, "and Joslyn, you will be able to survive this."
Joslyn covers her face with relief. But then, Tyra says Elina's name and reveals the picture in her hands. Everyone is shocked and misunderstood Tyra's speech. Elina cries, "I thought I was going home." Tyra tells her if she doesn't let go, next time she will go home.
As Joslyn packs, she says, "I am a survivor and I am still going to continue to strive for what I want in life. You will see me again."
