Learn more- The girls are back in Los Angeles. They cruise through the streets of LA in vintage cars, while Tyra welcomes them over the radio.
Samantha is bummed to be missing her prom, but she thinks it's a great opportunity to be here. Brittany B. just turned 18 and is still convinced she's already won. Turns out not only is Marjorie from France but was home schooled. She is worried she won't fit in with the other American girls. They all arrive at a roof to in downtown LA. Because there were three Brittanys in the competition, Tyra asked two of them to change their names. And so, Brittany R. is now McKey and Brittney B. is now Sharaun. Please make a note of it.
The Jays show up. Ms Jay says, "For those of you who do not know, Tyra is from LA and got her start here, so we always come back to LA." Unless they go to New York.
They pile in the bus and head back to the house. The girls run and scream and jump on the bed. Hannah is excited there's electricity and water. The house is decked out with pictures of Tyra, except for one hallway that has the winners of her Fiercee Awards, which she apparently passed out on her talk show. Jaeda from Cycle 7 won Biggest Makeover Meltdown, Norelle from Cycle 3 won Worst Walk, and Joanie form Cycle 6 won the Ugliest Cry.
The girls bombard Isis with questions about her transition. She says she doesn't mind the questions, but she's just excited to be there. As she and McKey hang out in the pool, she explains transition is like going through puberty all over again.
Meanwhile, Clark and Hannah sit in the corner and admit that they are uncomfortable with Isis. Hannah says she tried to convince herself she was okay with it but really she's not. But coming from a small town in Alaska, she feels she has the right to her point of view.
Clark totally agrees. "Hell, yeah, if you walk around like that in a small town, you'd get shot. But it's not so much a close-minded view, it's just more traditional." She says because she's from a good Southern family she was thrown back by Isis. She thinks Isis has no place in this competition.
Tyra Mail. This year's shot is a lovely 40's-esque picture of you know who in postal gear. "Tomorrow is going to get really intimate in under a minute. I assure you it will be magical. Love, Tyra."
The girls head out to the Magic Castle. They are greeted by Ed Alonzo, the misfit of magic, and his two assistants, the Jays. After a few bad magic tricks, he makes Nigel and Paulina appear too.
Paulina explains modeling is the world of illusion and they have to be many things to many people, but today "we want to see who you really are." Speed-dating style. Each girl will have one minute of face time to impress the judges.
First, Sharaun meets with Nigel and tells him, "I am the next top model." He is not impressed. She says the same thing to Jay who replies, "Well, I guess there's nothing I can ask you because you have it all in the bag." Strike two. But she says, she's just confident but not cocky.
Paulina asks McKey what she'd do if a director proposed sexual relations during a photo shoot. Mckey replies, "Walk up to him, punch him in the face, kick him in the balls, and walk off." Not exactly the answer Paulina was expecting.
Jay asks Hannah, "What would you do to make sure we would always remember you?" Hannah says, "Be memorable." Duh.
Josslyn asks Ms. Jay for the greatest tip she can give her about runway walking. Jay replies snidely, "Keep your day job." They crack up together.
Nigel asks Marjorie who her favorite photographer is. After lots of nervous laughter, she says, "You?"
Samantha tells Paulina how she plays four sports at school and she could hold a ball for hours if she needed to. Paulina thinks Samantha, if she photographs well, is one of those Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, beautiful sunny blondes.
Nigel asks Isis, "If I have a light to the left, how will you pose if I'm down here?" (As in, to the right.) Isis strikes a classic pose with a hand to her face. Nigel asks why? "I know the light is over here, I'm trying to follow your camera but never lose the light." Good answer. Nigel thinks Isis is the only one who knew her stuff but that there was something different about her. Hmmm. Guess he didn't get the memo!
When the girls get back home, there's a big purple box in the yard full of model basics: two pairs of shoes, skirt, skinny jeans, little black dress.
Tyra Mail. "Fashion isn't the only way to make a statement. Love, Tyra."
Time for the photo shoot. They pull up to an old theater. On the marquee it says, "Vote here." Inside, Jay explains that the election is coming up, and never before has the younger generation been so excited and motivated about a presidential race. So for this shoot, they need to convince the younger generation that voting is sexy. All the girls who aren't registered (PSA placement!) will sign up today. Each girl will represent an issue of why it's important to vote. Jay shares that Tyra is so passionate about this year's election and has had many candidates on the Tyra Banks talk show so she really wanted one her favorite photographers, Mike Rosenthal. You may remember him from Caridee's circus shoot and the "smoking is bad" shoot.
Marjorie is up first. Her issue is immigration. Some of the other girls stand in as extras. She is great. Jay loves her concave back and variety in posing. He says, "She tried things that were awkward and different. Very editorial."
Brittany represents the military. Jay thinks its pretty.
Clark asks the girls about her issue, bureaucracy, because she doesn't know what it means. She asks McKey but she won't tell her. Still confused, Clark gives the same little smile throughout her whole shoot.
McKey is confused too, about how the environment plays into the whole "voting is sexy" thing. Jay asks her when she feels sexy and she says it's when she thinks about her boyfriend. So he tells her to pretend like she's wrestling him. As she starts punching the air, the shots look great.
Hannah's topic was nuclear weapons. She says, "Obviously I understand they have damaging effects, but I'm just not sure how I feel about them." Okay.
Elina is ready for her issue, foreign policy. Jay raves at her for smiling with her eyes.
Isis reflects how last year she was one of the background girls. But now it's her time. Her topic is privacy and a few girls are picked to stand behind so their silhouette will show through the sheet. Sharaun taunts her throughout the shoot. But Isis keeps her cool.
Sheena's issue is energy and sits on a little car with a gas pump. Jay warns Sheena to not make it hoochie, and tells her he'll yell hooch every time he needs her to bring it back. Click, hooch. Hooch. Double hooch. She asks, "Am I really that hoochie? I need a mirror."
Josslyn represents unemployment, and totally understands it because she doesn't have a job. Jay thinks she's hot. Almost Tyra Banks hot.
Analeigh is excited to be doing healthcare. Jay warns her not to collapse her neck.
Sharaun is homeland security and has a hard time on the set. Jay says, there's nothing sexy about it.
Samantha is the economy. Jay thinks she's bang on.
Lauren Brie is education and she's passionate about it. She's in college so this is an important issue to her.
Nikeysha is cloning. For her shoot, they are going to shoot half on one side then half on the other, then put them together. They loved the variety in her movement but not in her face.
Tyra Mail: "Tomorrow you will have you first meeting with the judges. Only 13 will continue in the hopes of becoming Americas Next Top Model. Love Tyra."
Time for judging. Instead of just a picture, an old style movie plays of Tyra getting her picture taken while wearing beer can rollers. Not sure if this represents recycling or drunk driving.
Tyra goes on about how important it is to vote, especially for women (PSA placement!) because it's our right and our responsibility. She introduced the judges. Ms Jay is wearing a big gold chain with a bling, 14, hanging from it.
And now for the judging...
Marjorie. Nigel thinks she's a ball of nerves but Paulina thinks she's smart. They love her picture.
Sharaun. Not impressed.
Elin. Not sexy in person but takes a great picture.
Samantha. Enough with the Cheryl Tiegs reference. Tyra thinks she needs a boyish haircut.
Nikeysha. She keeps interrupting the judges during the feedback. Tyra tells her she has problems taking critique. She obvious didn't learn the golden rule: Don't talk back to Tyra!
Clark. One of the worst pictures but Tyra thinks her legs are gorgeous.
Josslyn. They are all surprised how great her picture is.
Analeigh. Pretty but not too impressed. Expected her to be twirling.
Brittany. They love her picture. Paulina thinks it makes her feel patriotic.
Hannah. A mess with potential.
Sheena. Everyone thinks she's sexy. Ms. Jay calls her Kasheena.
McKey. Tyra loves her, but she's not a knockout for Nigel.
Lauren Brie. Nigel likes her big forehead.
Isis. Paulina and Nigel gush over how great she is. Jay explains the something special about Isis and Paulina and Nigel pretend to be surprised.
This year, the first name that is called in judging, will have their photo displayed as digital art in the house for the week. First name, Marjorie. Isis. McKey. Josslyn. Elina. Samantha. Brittany. Sheena. Analeigh. Clark. Lauren Brie. Hannah.
The final two: Sharaun and Nikeysha.
For Sharaun, during the interviews the judges were not inspired. Felt she doesn't have substance. And Nikeysha. Strong picture but not perfect. But the judges don't like to be cut off.
So who stays? Nikeysha. As Sharaun breaks down, and Clark smiles, Tyra tells her, "It's not just about wanting it, you have to be real." As she packs her bags, Sharaun says, "I'm confident, not cocky. I think they got the wrong impression. One day I'm gonna be big. I'll be somebody."
