Charlie Brown reflects on his most memorable Christmas while Lucy and Sally prepare for Valentine's Day and Peppermint Patty writes an award-winning essay on Snoopy. Charles M. Schulz's trademark gentle charm, warm humor, and bittersweet sensibility are neatly at work here, with the good-natured tone, vivid characters, and witty dialogue adding up to a satisfyingly brisk and lighthearted 22 minutes. The Christmas vignette stands out as the best, most sharp, and amusing segment: Lucy is assigned the task of directing the annual yuletide play, so she forces Linus to sing and Charlie Brown to raise money to finance the play (Brown sells wreaths door to door with zero success), makes Snoopy her ice skating partner, and casts Patty in a demeaning nothing role as a sheep. Naturally, said play proves to be a total disaster. The Valentine's Day tale has its moments as well: Charlie Brown once more pines from afar for the little redhead girl, Lucy annoys Linus by constantly calling him her Sweet Baboo, Charlie accidentally punches the ever-obnoxious Lucy (it's about time!), and Snoopy and Woodstock are the only ones who wind up getting a slew of cards. The final Snoopy story is pretty slight, but still cute. The groovy theme song hits the right-on happening spot. A pleasant diversion.
