Storyline

January 1920. On the eve of Prohibition, Atlantic City's Treasurer, Nucky Thompson, condemns alcohol at a Women's Temperance League meeting, where he is noticed by Margaret Schroeder, a pretty, pregnant housewife who comes to him for help in getting her abusive husband Hans a job. Later that evening, the duplicitous Nucky privately tells his ward bosses about the opportunity to make huge profits selling bootleg liquor. At a countdown-to-midnight blast at Babette's Supper Club, he assures Jimmy Darmody, a recently returned WWI vet, that his appointment as "Man Friday" to the new Chief Clerk of the Fourth Ward, Paddy Ryan, will lead to bigger things. Jimmy, meanwhile, has higher aspirations and ends up making an alliance that could have dire consequences for both him and Nucky. Written by HBO Publicity

All I Can Say Is "Wow"

Boardwalk Empire has the potential to become television's Goodfellas or Godfather Part 2. This pilot episode, directed by Martin Scorcese, is very hooking and addictive for starters. It's masterfully acted, has the authentic feel for the time period, has a gripping story, and just looks like a world you would want to be in.....maybe. This series has an all-star cast led by Steve Buscemi who is excellent, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon, and Kelly Macdonald.

This pilot introduces us to Nucky Thompson who is from Atlantic City and is half gangster, half politician. On the eve of Prohibition, he makes a deal that will involve illegal booze in the city. Meanwhile, we meet a young hotshot just done with the war and wants more to do and of course the specialized-trained task forces designed just for Prohibition.

Overall, this is an excellent pilot. I am looking forward to the next three seasons and I hope each episode is just as good as the pilot. I also like how they took so much care to make this episode very historically accurate. They certainly did their research. I rate this episode 9/10.
