Jordan M. Smith’s Top Ten Films of 2012: First-timer Helmers Rodney Ascher & Benh Zeitlin Crack Top 10 (Picks 10 to 6)

31 December 2012 12:30 PM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

10. Beasts of the Southern Wild

Another film I sorely missed in Park City, but finally caught during its theatrical release, Benh Zeitlin’s full length debut is pure southern magic. Following directly in the stylistic footsteps of his splendidly original short, Glory At Sea, the film is about finding inner strength to overcome outrageous odds and conforming to a life almost predetermined for us. Zeitlin seems to reject these deliberations for his own enchanted aesthetic where fables and realities collide. It also doesn’t hurt to have Quvenzhané Wallis play Hushpuppy, the cute and righteous face that harbor’s a swelling, juvenile fervency that buttresses the whole picture. It will be very interesting to see where Zeitlin goes from here.

9. Prometheus

There were few films this year I was more excited for than this one. Ridiculous plot holes, broad characterizations, ridiculous old man make-up and all, this was still one of my favorites. »

Top 10 Movie Trailers of 2012

31 December 2012 8:50 AM, PST | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

Long before a film hits the big screen, movie trailers have already come along to whet our appetite and make us yearn for the release date to hurry up and get here… at least if they’re done right. These 10 are done right.

#10 The Grey

I’ll be honest and admit this trailer lands at the tail-end of the list, not because of the trailer, but because of the movie. Is that unfair? No more unfair than being lured in by an incredible trailer to watch a sucky movie. Liam Neeson using broken bottles as an improvised pair of brass knuckles? Who could resist that? Too bad the actual film didn’t even come close to measuring up. From the lame CGI wolves to the unfulfilling ending, this trailer more than any other reveals the downside to awesome movie previews.

#9 The Great Gatsby

Have I read The Great Gatsby? No, »

This Week on Blu-ray & DVD: Buy ‘Looper’ and ‘Justified,’ Rent or Avoid the Rest

31 December 2012 8:00 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! As always, if you see something you like, click on the image to buy it. Justified: The Complete Third Season Deputy Us Marshall Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) is a patient man, but even he has his limits. His feuds with Boyd (Walton Goggins) and Dickie (Jeremy Davies) are still going strong when two more men enter the fray in the form of a Detroit mobster (Neal McDonaugh) and a local butcher named Limehouse (Mykelti Williamson). Not everyone will be standing by the end of these thrilling and entertaining as hell thirteen episodes. Three seasons in this FX series continues to shine thanks to sharp writing, a colorful cast of characters and the absolute coolness that Olyphant brings to Givens. Fun stuff, perfect length, highly recommended. Also available on DVD. [Extras: Commentaries, outtakes, deleted scenes, featurettes, interviews] Looper Pitch: Time to die… again… Why Buy? Dan’s Top 10 Films of 2012

31 December 2012 7:25 AM, PST | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

As 2012 draws to a close, here’s yet another top 10 list for you to have a read through.

One of my goals for 2012 was to try to go outside of the genre’s I’d usually frequent and expand my horizons. As you’ll see from the list, that wasn’t terribly successful. While you’ll see things like Beasts of the Southern Wild, Amour, The Master, and Moonrise Kingdom on other lists, you’ll not find them here because I haven’t seen them.

There are also films that I can’t include here because they don’t count as 2012 releases: American Mary, Maniac, and Sleep Tight are three of the best films I’ve seen this year, but they’ll have to wait for inclusion next time.

10) Shame

Shame is not a fun film to watch. It’s a bleak, depressing look at one man’s sex addiction »

'Secrets & Intimacy': Recap of Our Exclusive Interviews from 2012

31 December 2012 5:00 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

"I think cinema is a great place for secrets and intimacy." Its been quite a year. Looking back at 2012, I've been lucky enough to speak with legendary directors like Ridley Scott (for Prometheus) and Ang Lee (for Life of Pi), up-and-comers like Josh Trank (for Chronicle) and Rian Johnson (for Looper), interview esteemed actors like Michael Fassbender (for Prometheus) and Jason Clarke (for Zero Dark Thirty). Over the course of a year, we get to speak to many talented peopled in many places, in many different ways - over the phone, in person with a Flip cam, transcribed from audio, or even over Skype. I still consider it an honor every time we get to do an interview, and we wanted to recap all our interviews from this year below. Looper Blu-Ray Review

30 December 2012 10:28 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Rian Johnson is a writer/director who has slowly been making a name for himself. In 2005, he brought us the bizarre mystery film Brick, a film that I didn’t care much for, but which earned him a reputation. His follow-up film, The Brothers Bloom, was an excellent example of a con film that plays with the audience as much as it does with its characters. Now Johnson brings us his latest project, Looper, a fascinating science-fiction film that asks you to wrap your head around the age-old concept of time travel.

Set about 30 years into the future, we are informed that time travel has not been invented yet, but it will be in 30 years. At that time, since it’s nearly impossible to get rid of a body, a crime organization simply sends them back in time where they are killed and incinerated by hired guns known as “loopers. »

The Best Trailers Of 2012

30 December 2012 9:38 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

Theatrical Trailer: the official theatrical piece, usually cut from the first (very long) cut of the picture or sometimes (if there is no first cut yet) from dailies (all the shot footage, including all the different takes and angles), maximum length of a trailer is two and a half minutes.

Teaser Trailer: A first, short theatrical preview piece (usually not longer than a minute and a half), cut from a few selected takes and scenes while the picture is still being shot.

For those of you who think it’s okay to show up to a film after the coming attractions – move along. No self-respecting movie geek would dare miss the previews. And don’t get us started on the individuals who arrive during the trailer you’ve been dying to see only to move through your line of sight during the all-important money shot.

Looper Blu-ray Sales Hot Ahead of December 31 Release

30 December 2012 6:21 PM, PST | TheHDRoom | See recent TheHDRoom news »

Rian Johnson's Sci-Fi thriller Looper is making its Blu-ray and DVD debut on Monday, December 31 due to New Year's Day falling on the more traditional Tuesday release date. Though its official release is still a few hours out, pre-orders have been gaining strength over the past few days and have reached a milestone at online retailer Amazon.com.

Over the course of the past 24 hours, I have watched the Blu-ray edition of Looper slowly creep up Amazon's top 10 Blu-ray Bestsellers chart. It began in the fifth slot and by early afternoon had punched through into the second position. During my last check about 15 minutes ago, Looper had taken over the number one position.

I had hoped to have a Looper Blu-ray review ready for its release date but unfortunately DVD copies were sent out for review instead. I did watch Johnson's flick and believe the hype; it's a smart »

Premium Rush Blu-Ray Review

30 December 2012 2:51 PM, PST | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt takes to the streets with a bicycle in David Koepp’s fun and energetic Premium Rush. Unlike most late-summer films this one excels solely on its ability to have fun and provide you with a harmless way to kill an hour and a half. Premium Rush is rarely serious and instead a creative and sometimes exciting career booster for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and the always fantastic Michael Shannon.

Wilee (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) lives life in the fast lane. He’s a bike messenger and he absolutely loves the edge-of-your-seat lifestyle that he embodies, while fearing those that spend their days behind a desk wearing a fancy suit. He sports a plain bike, with no breaks or gears. It’s this way of living that drives him face-first into what seems to be another ordinary assignment of transporting an envelope from location A to location B.

Thn’s Top 5 Of 2012: Number 2

30 December 2012 9:18 AM, PST | The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news »

Following yesterday’s number three, we have today’s number two:

Skyfall – dir. Sam Mendes starring Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Ben Whishaw, Javier Bardem

The puzzling, and downright rotten, Quantum Of Solace, coupled with MGM’s financial troubles, meant Daniel Craig’s third Bond outing was heavily delayed. Trepidation of his return morphed into eager anticipation as Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road To Perdition) signed up to direct, then transformed into mouth-frothing excitement as Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem – the latter the villain of the piece – joined a cast already boasting Craig, Dame Judi Dench and Naomie Harris.

Mouths were satisfyingly wiped clean as Mendes crafted, possibly, the best Bond ever:

Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her, bringing MI6 under attack.

Reviews, News and Features contributor Esben marvelled in Mendes work, even nodding towards another great British director:

Sam Mendes created something that was brilliant, »

Top 10 Films of 2012

28 December 2012 9:04 PM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

From great documentaries to sweet indies to big studio movies, 2012 was one of the biggest years ever. It will be remembered for the reinvention of musicals with Tom Hooper.s Les Miserables, the meet-and-greet of horrifying engineers in Ridley Scott.s Prometheus and the toppling of an empire in Lauren Greenfield.s Queen Of Versailles.

There was no shortage from which to choose from at your local cinemas where superheroes reigned supreme at the box office, animated adventures were welcomed by young and old alike, and favorite characters from the various prequels and sequels were embraced like old friends.

As we head into the new year, some of the most anticipated films of 2013 are Zack Snyder.s Man Of Steel, J.J. Abrams. Star Trek Into Darkness, Shane Black.s Iron Man 3, Marc Forster.s World War Z, Dan Scanlon.s Monsters University, Gore Verbinski.s The Lone Ranger, Joseph Kosinski.s Oblivion, »

#10: The Cabin in the Woods (107 points)

Written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard

Directed by Drew Goddard

USA, 2012

Like Scream, it’s a self-aware slasher film, but where Scream was happy simply to turn the genre’s bloody glove inside out and examine the stitching, The Cabin in the Woods has more complicated ambitions. If Scream is a bloody glove turned inside out, then The Cabin in the Woods is a Russian nesting doll described by H. P. Lovecraft and carved by M. C. Escher. Like Hitchcock’s Psycho and Michael Powell’s Peeping Tom, The Cabin of the Woods isn’t just about killing, it is about watching (and filming) killing. Our sympathies are torn between the victims being watched and the watchers, including an action sequence modelled loosely on the Psycho car burial. What is perhaps most horrifying is that the watchers are almost bored, like a »
