Just the other day the first single from the soundtrack to Gary Ross’ highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games, a song called “Safe and Sound” by Taylor Swift and The Civil Wars, was released. While some were dismayed at the inclusion of the teen-skewing Swift, producer T. Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart) has much more up his sleeve as a few more contributing artists have now been announced. Burnett is collaborating with composer James Newton Howard not only on the film’s score, but also on an ambitious soundtrack album made up of original songs inspired by the film’s themes . Hit the jump to find out who’ll be joining Swift on the soundtrack. At the time of the “Safe and Sound” release, I mentioned that I was hopeful Burnett would include a wide-range of artists on the new album, and now my fears of an entirely teen-centric soundtrack have been alleviated. »

In addition to weapons and teenage murder, music plays a crucial role in Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games. Director Gary Ross recruited producer/songwriter T. Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart) and composer James Newton Howard (replacing Danny Elfman who dropped out due to scheduling issues) to collaborate on the ambitious soundtrack for the feature film adaptation, which is set to feature music and songs both for the film and ones by new and established artists inspired by the film. Today, none other than Taylor Swift has released the first song from the soundtrack. Swift and singer-songwriter duo The Civil Wars have collaborated on a track entitled “Safe and Sound.” Given her far-reaching commercial appeal, Swift seems an obvious choice to have the first track out of the gate. While many may groan at the thought of a pop-heavy soundtrack, this is likely the first of many tracks and collaborations we »

Older men may fare well in Oscars' acting categories, but voters treat the female acting races like a beauty pageant, frequently crowning such glamazons as Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Natalie Portman, Reese Witherspoon, and Nicole Kidman. View Gallery There is a clear divide in how male and female actors are perceived by the Academy. In the last two decades, only Helen Mirren ("The Queen," 2006) was over 50 when she won for her lead performance. Meanwhile, three of the last four Best Actor champs -- Colin Firth ("The King's Speech," 2010), Jeff Bridges ("Crazy Heart," 2009), and Daniel Day-Lewis ("There Will Be Blood," 2007) -- had all reached the half century mark while Sean Penn ("Milk," 2008) was 48. Compare that to recent Best Actress winners Portman ("Black Swan," 2010), Witherspoon ("Walk the Line," 2005), Charlize Theron ("Monster," 2003), Hilary Swank ( »

Michael C here to take stock of the performers left in the dust by the recent rush of precursors.
With the announcement of the Golden Globes and SAG nominations behind us the first round of the elaborate Kabuki dance known as Precursor Season is concluded. A week ago we could let our imaginations run wild with the possibilities of our favorite performances making good. Now if an actor hasn’t heard his or her name called by either group? Well, as George C. Scott once said to Peter Sellers, their chances have been quickly reduced to a very low order of probability.
So how low is low? What are the chances of a performance getting nominated without a Globe or SAG nomination?
Approximately 1 in 20. That's what my remarkably un-scientific research tells me. For this I took a look at the last 10 years. If you go back too far the stats become less relevant. »

How loyal is Tim Burton's frequent collaborator Danny Elfman? Enough that he'd drop out of one of the most high-profile projects of the year to help finish the enigmatic director's upcoming "Dark Shadows." With that film and "Men in Black III" filling his plate, Variety reports that those scheduling conflicts have caused Elfman to ankle from the hotly-anticipated "The Hunger Games."
Replacing Elfman on "The Hunger Games" is fellow Hollywood vet James Newton Howard, who has racked up credits on such pictures as M. Night Shyamalan's "Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable" and "The Village," "Dave," "Outbreak" and co-composer duties with Hans Zimmer on "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight."
Fellow scorer T. Bone Burnett, who snagged an Oscar for "Crazy Heart," is reportedly still attached to the project.

Composer Danny Elfman has had to drop out of scoring Gary Ross’ highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games. Variety reports that Elfman is unable to fulfill his commitment on the project due to scheduling conflicts (Men in Black III and Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows), and James Newton Howard has stepped in as his replacement. Back in June it was announced that Elfman would be collaborating on the project with producer T. Bone Burnett (Crazy Heart) on what would be an ambitious multi-album undertaking that included not only music and songs for the film, but a collection of songs influenced by the film from new and established artists. Though Elfman is departing, Burnett remains onboard and Variety says the transition will be seamless and will have no effect on post-production. Music plays a crucial role in The Hunger Games, with two highly important songs. I’m curious as to »
