Did You Know?

Face transplant: The surgery Sloan performs was also performed in France, on a woman named Isabelle Dinoire who had part of her face bitten off by her daughter's golden retriever with impressive results. See more »

The patient awaiting a face transplant - the one they call "Blowhole" - has no visible lips nor moving mouth parts. Yet he is able to clearly form the "b", "m", and "p" sounds which require the lips to interact with each other, as well as the "f" and "v" sounds which require the teeth to interact with the lips. The actor was either wearing a full prosthesis and speaking with his normal mouth behind the prosthesis, or his entire dialog was dubbed later without the prosthesis on. A patient with such a facial deformity would have a severe speech impediment, particularly with the letters listed above. See more »

Dr. Miranda Bailey: [to Owen] I need you to drive into the woods and talk Derek into coming back here and I believe you also might run into Callie Torres with a flat tire or a broken heel or an... ax-wielding serial killer.
Dr. Owen Hunt: You're serious?
Dr. Miranda Bailey: See, I sent Torres after Shepherd, and she's fallen off the grid. Her phone goes straight to voicemail. Okay, I'm not normally a panicky person, but I'm a fan of daytime television, and you know, the mind creates these scenarios... uh. never mind. I... I need you to go get Torres...

Beautiful, Touching and Wonderful.
28 March 2009 | by See all my reviews

I just don't have enough words to describe this amazing episode.

All the sadness, hopefulness, truth and beauty... I just spent the whole episode amazed with was surging on the screen.

The story of the patient with a deformed face was important and at the same time hopeful (besides the make-up is incredible) and the actor who plays the character is great as well.

The Derek plot(necessary for a long time) gets to a moving edge and will probably continue until this season finale.

But what's most wonderful in this episode is Izzie. Who'd say that such a supporting character would become the fifth season's dramatic factor? Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh and Patrick Dempsey are perfect and I hope that the three of them get Emmy nominations.

And finally it's so great to see that Grey's Anatomy's writers found the inspiration to (hopefully) turn this season finale into the best one ever.

Just perfect.
