Sex & Nudity

  • This movie contains the following keywords: addiction, adultery, alcoholism, blackmail, capital murder, death, drug addiction, Gore, murder, rape, strong sexual content, suicide, theft and violence.
  • Teenagers talk about sex in an extremely vulgar manner, using terms so vivid that most of them are near unprintable, including references to felching and cunnilingus.
  • Lance kisses Claire multiple times, and eventually has sex with her on screen. He begins to thrust, the bed rocks, she graphically requests for rear-entry, and this goes on for another 20 seconds or so.
  • Towards the end of the movie, Lance takes off all his clothes and jumps into the school pool. Although in the beginning you can't see anything, once he jumps in the water you can see his genitals when the camera goes underwater.

Violence & Gore

  • Suicide is referenced extensively, and Lance goes to great lengths (even faking a journal) to make Kyle's death look like a suicide. He even moves his son's dead body to the closet and "rehangs" him. In one scene, multiple people seem to be seeing the ghost of Kyle, and in one instance, the ghost appears to possibly be cutting his wrists. Lance sees Kyle's dead body in a PTSD-like flash before a swarm of kids hug him.
  • A teenager carves Kyle's name into her leg with a compass, creating bloody marks.

Profanity

  • Plenty of profanity, mostly said by teenagers in the first half. Fuck (at least 15), Shit, Asshole, and Fag are uttered the most frequently, but an assortment of other anatomical terms are used liberally throughout.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Pot Brownies like those drug desserts with this in it is graphically used throughout this movie.
  • Lance eats pot via brownies or smokes joints at least 4 times, handing a brownie to a teenager in one instance.
  • People drink alcohol socially.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • In the first two minutes a young man is shown in front of a computer with a cord around his neck. The scene sets a disturbing tone for the rest of the film.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • The film's main plot point revolves around a teenager accidentally dying from auto-erotic asphyxiation. The first time, early on, he's interrupted by his father, but the second time, the father comes home a few minutes late to find his son's lifeless body (the body is only visible in shadows, and so Lance isn't humiliated, he re-hangs him to make it look like a suicide and fakes a suicide note, as well as a full diary). The photo that it's implied Kyle was pleasuring himself to was of Lance's girlfriend in her panties (Kyle took the photo with his cameraphone under the table).

Violence & Gore

  • A teenager accidentally dies of auto-erotic asphyxiation, due to masturbating while having a belt around his neck (not shown, you just see the body in shadows afterwards).

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The entire movie after Kyle dies while masturbating and his father faking his son's death by hanging (because of embarrassment) may be quite upsetting depending on who the viewer is. Some might find it upsetting but get over it quickly while others may be depressed for the rest of the movie and frustrated at Lance for faking his son's death, creating a faux suicide note and journal and using the advantage of everyone's love for his son and thinking that Kyle wrote it all himself, when in reality Lance wrote it himself to get his writing out there as an act of desperation, even though wasn't his originally intended.
