2016 is shaping up to be a banner year for video game movies, with the highly-anticipated releases of Warcraft and Assassin's Creed, and a new Tomb Raider also in the works, starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander. Today we have word that another iconic video game is heading to the big screen, Sega's Shinobi. Producer Marc Platt is developing the adaptation with Stories International Inc., the production arm of the Sega Group.
According to Variety, Marc Platt will produce this adaptation with his Marc Platt Productions partner Adam Siegel, along with Stories International President and CEO Tomoya Suzuki. The original Sega video game was launched in 1987, which spawned a number of sequels such as Shadow Warrior and The Revenge of Shinobi. The original game centered on a character named Joe Musashi, who became a skilled ninja with the Oboro clan, as he fought off an evil ninja syndicate known as Zeed. Here's »

Both actors are attached to star in the film which Gordon-Levitt came up with the idea for and enlisted Michael Bacall to pen the script. Bacall previously worked with Gordon-Levitt on "Manic" and Tatum on the "21 Jump Street" films, whilst the two actors previously worked together on "Havoc" and "Stop-Loss".

Universal Pictures has picked up an untitled musical comedy which has Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt attached to star. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that the project is described as an R-rated comedy centering on two pilots experiencing a misadventure. Universal picked up the project through a competitive bidding situation, but it isn't clear what other studios were vying for this Untitled Musical Comedy project.
Marc Platt, who produced the hit musical Wicked, is producing alongside Adam Siegel through their Marc Platt Productions company. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is producing through his hitRECord Films company, alongside Channing Tatum, Reid Carolin and Peter Kiernan's company Free Association. Kirstin Lowe, Universal's senior vice-president of production, will oversee the project for the studio.

Most of the time it’s impossible to get excited about a film based solely on a brief announcement or blurb. But the revelation today that Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Channing Tatum are working on an R-rated musical comedy is enough to for any cinephile to start praying to the movie Gods and pleading for it to happen. News regarding this potential film is still very much at a minimum, but even what little we do know is enough to be excited about.
