Generally, a figure of speech is just that–speech. Words. Not real actions. But on The Wendy Williams Show today, host Wendy Williams made good on an old saying by literally eating crow.

Debmar-Mercury Sets Syndication, Digital Development Pact with Gannett

2 June 2014 10:02 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Debmar-Mercury has set a wide-ranging syndication development pact with Gannett Broadcasting that calls for the partners to mount regional tests of various programs using the broad reach of Gannett’s 40-plus TV stations.

The tests are expected to begin next year and will also emphasize efforts to weave interactive features into the programs, as well as building in mobile access for viewers from the start.

Tailoring programming for mobile platforms is a big focus for large station groups like Gannett at present as the mobile digital market is generally viewed as a under-leveraged opportunity for local broadcast stations. Gannett, which last year doubled the size of its station holdings with by acquiring Belo Television, would love to be able to impress Wall Street — not to mention viewers — with innovative program offerings across multiple platforms.

‘Wendy Williams Show’ to Continue Production into Summer

Debmar-Mercury announced that it will keep talker “The Wendy Williams Show” in production through June and July for a second consecutive year.

“We believe the ratings strength we’ve seen over the past season and during the May sweeps, despite having weaker lead-ins, is due in part to remaining in year-round production since last summer,” Debmar-Mercury co-presidents Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein said in a statement. “By keeping the lights on throughout June and July, in a quiet period traditionally reserved for firstrun shows to take their summer hiatuses, we intend to once again follow a strategy that has worked very well for us this past year. By remaining in production, we can offer Wendy’s younger fans that are home from school and college the opportunity to get their take on the day’s hottest topics and guests from a talented, multifaceted host whose rising popularity is a reflection of her universal appeal. »

CBS announced its fall schedule which is both a big shake-up and a return to CBS’ conservative scheduling. The network is moving away from serialized shows like Hostages but every night’s line-up will be changed. Probably the biggest move is dropping the two-hour comedy block on Mondays. The last time CBS aired a drama on Monday it was Scarecrow & Mrs. King in 1986.

CBS joined the networks promising year-round programming, noting that one of the season’s biggest new dramas was the summer show Under the Dome. There’s a good number of new and returning shows not on CBS’ announced schedule, they’ll be used to limit the number of repeats throughout the year.

At least Under the Dome had Mike Vogel to look at.

ABC’s new fall schedule sees the network make Thursday nights an all-Shonda Rhimes line up (the last time a producer was responsible for an entire night of ABC’s programming was when it featured three Aaron Spelling shows on Saturday night).

Shonda Rhimes isn’t just responsible for ABC’s Thursday night line-up, Vulture sees her creative mark all over the network schedule, from the diversity on and off-screen, the big dramatic flourishes of Revenge or the upcoming Secret & Lies. Perhaps they could also pick up more of Rhimes’ tendency to include queer characters as part of the universe?
