SXSW Adds RZA, ‘Selma’ Director Ava DuVernay as Speakers

16 December 2014 11:48 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

South by Southwest has added “Selma” director Ava DuVernay and musician RZA as keynote speakers at the Austin festival, which runs March 13-21.

Ava DuVernay’s career evolution is fascinating,” said SXSW film chief Janet Pierson. “She began directing independent films while running her own successful marketing firm before expanding into distribution and now, she is helming a groundbreaking studio picture. Her passion, fearlessness, and excellence are extraordinary.”

Pierson also said, “RZA may seem like a somewhat out-of-the-box choice for a film keynote given his prominence as a musician. What is inspiring is how his love of film has informed his entire career and creativity. We’re intrigued by his increasing work as a multi-hyphenated filmmaker, actor and curator.”

DuVernay has been nominated for a Golden Globe for “Selma.” She won the 2012 Sundance Film Festival best director award and the John Cassavetes Independent Spirit Award for “Middle of Nowhere.”

Guardians Of The Galaxy Blu-Ray Review

Guardians of the Galaxy Blu-Ray Review

Guardians of the Galaxy hit theaters with surprising force, based on the fact that it is a comic-book film based on characters virtually no one knows, and the Blu-Ray is here to repeat the frenzy. Part space opera, part comic adventure, the film is an unusual hybrid of elements, made all the more interesting by way of characters who aren’t going to be explained, and are themselves rather fantastic.

Catch our podcast review of Guardians of the Galaxy here.

The film introduces us, in rather spectacular fashion, to Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), who fancies himself Star Lord, galactic superthief, or something. Having been abducted from Earth as a child, though again, this is a film with little interest in backstory, Peter was raised by the criminals who captured him, and he now finds himself outfitted with some really snazzy tech.

This time, rummaging through a forgotten world, »

10 Batista Controversies That James Bond Fans Need To Know About

5 December 2014 8:23 AM, PST | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

WWE

Dave Batista, one of the most successful wrestlers of the last decade, is making great strides in Hollywood now, too.

After cutting his teeth in television and straight-to-dvd fare such as the Ja Rule film ‘The Wrong Side Of Town’ and the RZA-directed The Man With The Iron Fists, Batista hit it big with a celebrated role in Mavel’s The Guardians Of The Galaxy.

The role brought Batista, who returned to WWE for a brief run after a four year absence earlier this year, to the attention of Hollywood who were more than impressed with his performance in the film.

It was confirmed this week that Batista will play the role of bad guy Mr. Hinx in the upcoming James Bond film Spectre. Obviously this is a big deal because Bond is a huge franchise and there will be more eyes on Batista than ever before. But »

Dustin Nguyen Faces Off With RZA In The Man With The Iron Fists 2 Trailer

29 November 2014 1:30 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Though RZA's directorial and starring effort The Man With The Iron Fists under performed at the box office it still did enough business for Universal to quietly give the go ahead to a straight-to-video sequel with the directing duties this time handed off to Dtv stalwart Roel Reine, the Dutch helmer responsible for a pair of Death Race sequels along with Scorpion King 3. This is not to say things can't be solidly entertaining, though, as the addition of Twitch fave Dustin Nguyen in a key role is always a plus as is Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa. And the trailer looks pretty solid as well. Take a look below!...

'Mommy', 'Serena', 'Pawn Sacrifice' & 'Hayride 2' in Today's MPAA Ratings Bulletin

26 November 2014 7:10 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

This has got to be one of the more interesting MPAA ratings bulletins in a while and not because of the recognizable names, but more for the abundance of sequels I had never heard of. The only one I've heard of (and have actually seen and entirely disliked) is Rec 4: Apocalypse, but beyond that we have Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse, Hayride 2 (a sequel to a movie about a serial killer haunting a family hayride) and did you know they made a sequel to The Man With The Iron Fists and yes, RZA is back and starring and also wrote the screenplay and it may or may not be called The Man with the Iron Fists: Sting of the Scorpion. The first one made just over $19 million worldwide on a $15 million budget, my guess is he got about $5 million to make this one... max. As for the films we've »

Warcraft Movie Panel - Blizzcon 2014

Warcraft director Duncan Jones, Senior VP of Story and Franchise Development Chris Metzen and VFX Supervisor Bill Westenhofer participated in the Blizzcon panel over the weekend, moderated by Nerdist’s Chris Hardwick. The trio spoke about how they went adapting a huge gaming universe into a two-hour film, and revealed that the film would attempt to tell the story of World of Warcraft giving equal weight to the human Alliance and the Horde of Orcs. “I thought it was very important that the film allowed you to be on either side of the conflict,” Jones said at the panel.

Westenhofer did not create the orcs out of green screens – actors played the creatures in motion capture – but he did transform the performances from human to Orc, »

Jamie Chung and Genesis Rodriguez are no one's sidekicks in 'Big Hero 6'

7 November 2014 1:25 PM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

While I would never recommend a film only because of its message or its themes, when a movie can entertain and inspire in equal measure, I consider it a tremendous bonus. That's the case with "Big Hero 6," which opens in theaters everywhere this weekend. It is a fun, sweet, occasionally very silly superhero story that mixes equal parts Disney Feature Animation and Marvel Comics to excellent effect. It is also, unabashedly, a film that celebrates the virtues of being smart. It amazes me that we should have to reinforce that idea at all. It should be a given at this point that there is something admirable about genuine intellectual curiosity, and it should be exciting on a cultural level when we make major breakthroughs in science. Instead, there seems to be a cultural divide, and it seems to be getting wider, in which there are people who are defiantly proud to be stupid. »

Rapper, producer, and filmmaker RZA is set to bolster his acting credentials even further by joining Paco Cabezas’ romantic action-comedy, Mr. Right.

According to Deadline, RZA — real name Robert Fitzgerald Diggs — will star alongside Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick in the film, which follows a young woman (Kendrick) who falls head over heels for the seemingly perfect man. However, as the story unfolds, we learn that the titular Mr. Right just so happens to moonlight as a hitman — now that’s a gnarly skeleton to keep locked up in the closet.

Nonetheless, in terms of RZA’s role, it’s understood the celebrated rapper will step into the shoes of Shotgun Steve, a trained marksman who collaborates with an opposing gangster. At this stage, that’s all we have in terms of plot details, though Deadline reports that Max Landis — the scribe behind 2012’s excellent found footage superhero flick, Chronicle. »
