An unsub's paradise is his victims' torture
TheLittleSongbird18 February 2017
Season 4 is a very strong contender for the best season of 'Criminal Minds'. A season with so many classics (like "The Big Wheel", "Zoe's Reprise" and "Conflicted" to name a few), some of the best of the whole show, and one where even weaker episodes such as "Demonology" and "Catching Out" are still watchable and much better than the worst episodes of Seasons 6, 9 and 11.

"Paradise" is not the season or show at its best, but even with an idea that is not that original in concept (with eerie similarities to the likes of 'Psycho' and 'Vacancy') it does a very good job on the whole executing it. Maybe some of the pacing could have flowed a little better in places, with occasional draggy stretches towards the start and parts of the script slightly tighter, but actually other than lacking the extra something that makes the best 'Criminal Minds' episodes so good there is not really much to criticise "Paradise" for.

Visually the production values are without complaint. It's very well shot and lit and is overall stylish, gritty, classy and atmospheric. The music is moody in the haunting and melancholic sense and fits well, without either enhancing or distracting from it. The direction keeps the momentum going but lets the case breathe, and most of the pacing is breathe especially in the latter parts when the tension builds.

It's a mostly well-written episode too, thoughtful, solid in flow and well balanced between case and team dynamic. The story makes up for its lack of originality for its skin-crawling, unnervingly dark tension, especially in the climax, where one is really reminded of a horror. The profiling and detective work is great.

Love the team dynamic as always, like with Garcia's refreshing humour and Rossi's sympathetic and sassy air. Unlike one of the previous reviewers (and this is not the first time this criticism has been seen and stated), it was not a bad thing for a very intelligent human being like Hotch to not be perfect and make mistakes like we all do. One can see his mistake as a big one, but actually, while the viewer knows the truth before the team does, bear in mind that it is not the first time in the show's history, nor the last or worst, for the unsub to be clearer to the viewer before them and in those cases any fore-shadowing is much more obvious, to me the unsub was actually very believable as a normal innocent person (as any signs of them being the unsub happened after the meeting Hotch had no reason to suspect) and that was what made them easier to trust and what made them so creepy.

Acting is very good as ever. All the regulars are without fault, while Wil Weaton is frightfully eerie, even with minimal screen time he still makes Floyd a memorable character.

In conclusion, not a 'Criminal Minds' classic but a very good episode. 8/10 Bethany Cox

It's the goofs that get me

Warning: Spoilers
It was a great episode. Cool stunts and showing a human side to Hotch - a vulnerability we don't often see. But I live in the area this was supposed to be around Lake Tahoe. The victims were found slightly north, east and just south of the lake. The town of Sherwood is actually a ghost town. The area they were looking in would have actually been Douglas County but the local cops that were making the request (and the name on the sheriff cars) is for Storey County which is east of Reno.

Otherwise it was interesting seeing Wil Wheaton playing a bad guy. It is nice to see someone with range.

Every episode like this please !

I want every episode to be like this one, Its a way better format for the series, its way better when we see more of the murderer and less talk, in the first 3 seasons some episodes did not even show the murderer until the end and it was all talk.

I get it, its a show about profiling, but not for 30 minutes... With Season 4 it looks like the show finally find the right balance between Talk and "Action scene" ( the antagonist in action) And its for the best, that same story without The motel scenes would have been a 7/10 Here its a 9/10.

Dear, dear Mr Crusher!

My, my, my. How terrible to see that a Starfleet cadet grew up to be such a nasty man! Mind you, wasn't it obvious, even then, that such a Mummy's boy would come to a nasty end? Captain Picard must be so disappointed!

I have to say it took me a while to figure out why the actor was so familiar, but once I had, I have to admit he did a great acting job. Love this new series, the opening episode was excellent. The thing I love about this programme is the characters. I'd hope to see a little more about each of them, in the this series, or maybe the next. I hope it runs and runs. Although that may change if the plot lines become impossible to suspend belief for. Keep up the good work writers!

Stupid Hotchner

Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the seasons he was one of the most intelligent agents. He even profiled a lawyer questioning his capability. But in this episode, he talked and seen the UnSub and yet he did not suspect him? What a stupid SOB. The writers of these series are regressing. If there was one thing I learned watching this series is that STUPIDITY KILLS, LITERALLY! Writers should keep up. This show is becoming too predictable. It has lose it's charm and mysterious ambiance. I can spot the Un Sub if he/she is shown. I am just gonna write this line to reach the minimum lines for posting. Filler filler filler. Filler filler filler.

Trigger Warning plus sexualized scene that should be the opposite.

Warning: Spoilers
Let's sexualize rape by focusing on the victims crotch The camera leers)as the perp slowly raises her skirt. Oh, and we are told all of the victims were not wearing underwear. It is DESPICABLE to say rape is wrong but show it as a soft porn moment Heaven forbid we should focus on the evil nature of the act! Ever wonder why on shows like this they show attractive women getting attacked? Because they are not at all interested in the ugliness of rape.

I expected more from this show. Silly me. Wonder how many guys were turned on by this crap. Just a though- there needs to be more responsibility coming from producers regarding sensitive subjects!
