Sony Plans "Robotech" Film Franchise

26 March 2015 5:49 AM, PDT | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Sony Pictures has secured the live-action film rights to the popular anime series "Robotech" which they plan to turn into a potential franchise.

The original 1985 show was actually a combination of three different Japanese television shows - footage from "Super Dimensional Fortress Macross," "Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross," and "Genesis Climber Mospeada" was cobbled together and redubbed to create an original 85-episode animated series that could be syndicated across U.S. markets.

As a result, a lot of rewriting and editing had to be done to stitch together three unrelated series to portray it as one cohesive storyline that spans three generations. To this day, the first season (based on the 'Macross' series) remains the most well-regarded.

Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton ("300," "Immortals") are producing and Michael Gordon ("300," "GI Joe") is writing the script. Various people have tried to adapt the series into a film over the past decade including Tobey Maguire, »

Sony Scores Rights To Robotech

25 March 2015 5:02 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Having stalled at Warner Bros over the last couple of years, the rights to the '80s anime franchise Robotech have now been snapped up by Sony. Producers Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari (300, Immortals) have big things planned, and they're not just talking about giant mecha. In development at Warners since 2007 when Tobey Maguire and Akiva Goldsman were involved at that point), Robotech was born out of the 1980s Japanese anime, bought by Harmony Gold USA and Japan’s Tatsunoko Productions, which re-edited and redubbed three different series to make into a daily syndicated ‘toon for audiences in the Us and elsewhere. In the series, mankind builds machines using technology developed from a crashed alien spaceship to fend off three different alien invasions, including one race of huge warriors none too happy about us pinching their tech and power source."When the rights to Robotech became available we jumped," says Nunnari. »

Smallville's John Schneider Wasn't A Big Fan Of Man Of Steel's Jonathan Kent

14 March 2015 4:30 AM, PDT | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Not only did 2013's Man Of Steel finish with a total box office gross of over $668 million, it also managed to successfully launch the DC Cinematic Universe, which will pick up again in 2016 with Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The cast features Henry Cavill (Immortals) and five-time Academy Award nominee  Amy Adams (Enchanted) returning as Superman and Lois Lane respectively, Academy Award-winner Ben Affleck (Daredevil) as Batman, Gal Gadot (Fast Five) as Wonder Woman, and Jason Momoa (Game Of Thrones) as Aquaman, amongst others. While it was financially successful, Man Of Steel managed to be one of the more controversial CBMs in recent memory. While many fans loved and enjoyed it, an equal number of fans were left wanting and weren't as happy with some of the liberties director Zack Snyder took in the film and it looks like we can add Smallville's John Schneider to that long »

Check Out The First Trailer For Tarsem Singh's Selfless

5 March 2015 5:00 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Tarsem Singh is known for his stunning creative/surreal visuals in the likes of Immortals and The Cell, so this one looks to be something of a departure in that regard. We're still firmly in sci-fi territory though, as Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) strives for immortality by having his conciousness shifted to a "host" body that looks a lot like Green Lantern minus the crappy mask. He's happy to live the high life for a while, until... yeah you get the idea. Check out the trailer and poster below. In this provocative psychological science fiction thriller, an extremely wealthy man (Academy Award® Winner Ben Kingsley) dying from cancer undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). Ben Kingsley Becomes Ryan Reynolds In Trailer For Self/Less

4 March 2015 12:40 PM, PST | www.themoviebit.com | See recent TheMovieBit news »

Last time we saw director Tarsem Singh, he was tackling fairy tales with Mirror, Mirror (which followed such visually stunning projects like The Cell, The Fall, and Immortals). Now, he's handling body swapping in sci-fi thriller Self/Less, which sees an extremely wealthy man (Ben Kingsley), dying of cancer, undergo a radical procedure to transplant his consciousness into a younger body (Ryan Reylonds). But, of course, he finds out that a secret corporation peddling immortality isn't all it seems. Self/Less is as high concept as they come, but this first trailer does a great job of selling the story, and hints at deeper psychological aspect to the plot that should shake thing up nicely. Singh's trademark visual style seems to be missing, but no doubt it'll make it self known when the movie takes an inevitable turn for the crazy. Released: July 31st »

Tarsem’s ‘Self/less’ starring Ben Kingsley and Ryan Reynolds gets a trailer

4 March 2015 12:00 PM, PST | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Tarsem Singh has always been one for visually dazzling films. His latest output, from Immortals and Mirror Mirror, have been messy disappointments compared to the whimsical charms of the underrated gem The Fall. His latest however places him firmly in thriller territory rather than fantasy spectacle. Self/less stars Ben Kingsley as a wealthy, powerful, successful man who wishes to transfer his mind into a younger body, played by Ryan Reynolds. But the doctor responsible for this procedure (Matthew Goode) is hiding a sinister secret as to the origins of Reynolds’s past life and to the procedure’s side effects.

Granted, the last time Ryan Reynolds starred in a body switch movie it was called The Change-Up. This thankfully looks nothing like that. Self/less is released July 31 and also stars Michelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez, Victor Garber, and Derek Luke. Watch the trailer below:

Watch: First Trailer For Tarsem’s Biogenic Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Self/Less’ Starring Ryan Reynolds

4 March 2015 8:50 AM, PST | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Tarsem; he is the mono monikered director behind “The Fall” and “The Cell.” After being absent for a few years, he made up for lost time in 2011/2012 with the almost one-two punch of “Immortals” and “Mirror Mirror” — both films were released within five months of each other. And while neither did much to quell the criticism that Tarsem is style over substance, they did decent enough worldwide business to keep the Tarsem brand in business. And so his latest is the biogenic sci-fi thriller “Self/Less,” which is about an extremely wealthy man dying from cancer, who undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man. Of course things like this don’t always go according to plan. Ben Kingsley stars as the older scion, Ryan Reynolds his younger self, and the movie also co-stars Matthew Goode, »

First Trailer For Tarsem’s ‘Self/Less’ Finds Ben Kingsley Inhabiting Ryan Reynolds’ Body

A consistently underrated expert of the visual medium, Tarsem might not always have the material to back up his story, but The Fall, Immortals, and, yes, even Mirror Mirror showed he can defy expectations. His latest film, Self/Less, teams him with Ryan Reynolds (who with The Voices has shown he’s looking for something a bit different) and today the first trailer has arrived. The story follows a […] »

It has been a few years since filmmaker Tarsem Singh came out with "Immortals" and "Mirror Mirror" within just a few months of each other. Now though he's back with all his usual visual style in the first trailer for his new sci-fi thriller "Self/Less".

The plot is best described as a far smarter sounding "Freejack" with Ben Kingsley playing a wealthy but dying scion who undergoes a radical medical procedure that transfers his consciousness into the body of a healthy young man (Ryan Reynolds). Matthew Goode, Michelle Dockery, Natalie Martinez, Derek Luke and Mariana Paola Vicente also star in the film which opens July 31st.

It's been a few years since we've seen anything from visionary director Tarsem Singh (Mirror Mirror, Immortals) but the trailer for his latest, Selfless, is finally here. Luke Evans is exhausted. "Just talking about it brings back those cold days...when I was fighting 70 stunt guys with a broomstick as a sword," said the actor of "Dracula Untold," his first studio feature as a leading man. Though we were on the phone to discuss that film's upcoming Blu-ray release, there's certainly a lot more for Evans be tired about - since taking on his first major role in the 2010 fantasy actioner "Clash of the Titans," he's starred in a string of high-profile Hollywood films, from Paul W.S. Anderson's "Three Musketeers" to "Immortals" to "Fast and Furious 6" to the last two installments of Peter Jackson's epic "Hobbit" trilogy.
