Set during World War II, the film follows a young brother and sister as they attempt to survive the aftermath of the firebombing of Kobe City.
I can't say enough good things about this movie.
I did see the anime first, but seeing it portrayed by real people hits hard. I also got a better understanding of what the aunt was going through, and Seita and Setsuko were perfect for their roles.
I also liked how the story was explained by one of their cousins (the aunt's oldest daughter) to her granddaughter in present day Kobe.
One thing I had to wonder was why they didn't use Setsuko's wonderful line from the anime. You know the one: "Why do fireflies die so young?"
Overall, a terrific movie as well as one that shows just how underrated J-cinema is.
