The past of Tobias Moretti as a spy haunts the present
21 April 2016 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"Flores negras" (2009) is a neo-noir spy story. Its roots go back to the Cold War. In the present, there is a conspiratorial organization of past agents drawn from both sides, East and West. They are threatened, however, by internal rivalries and leaks of information about their existence and power in influencing governments. There is one big threat, which is a list of the members, and Tobias Moretti is thought to have that list. He finds himself hunted and hounded for the list. He has become a chef and has raised the daughter (Marta Etura) of a woman who had the list 18 years ago and was killed before she could give it up to Moretti and another agent, Héctor Colomé.

From these elements is constructed a reasonable story with Moretti hunting for those who are hunting, harrying and threatening him. I liked it. It's atmospheric. It's low-key. It has a feeling of realism. The side characters are developed nicely. The cast is good. The story is fractured and non-linear enough to be intriguing and keep one involved. It doesn't have a huge impact or message, but it makes for decent entertainment.

I've seen and reviewed previously another film of the director, David Carreras, which was "Hipnos". There is a similarity in style. Both unfold in a low-key but tense way, without a lot of exposition or leading the viewer by the nose. One is unsure for awhile where one stands, but then matters clarify. There is not an excess of emotion. Actors do not over-act under his direction, but they are intense. There is a background of hidden conspiracy and forces at work. Atmosphere is created nicely. I hope that Carreras has the opportunity to write and direct more movies in which his talent and skills can deepen and develop.
