Zac Efron: Joking His Way to Movie Stardom

14 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

A lot of young women — or former young women — may disagree with me, but for a while there Zac Efron came off as a poster boy for the following notion: that it’s possible to be too good-looking to be a movie star. In the “High School Musical” films, of course, he was all mussy-coiffed, aqua-blue-eyed charm — a wholesome hunk who knew how to dance, and when he wasn’t dancing knew how to micromanage his charisma so that it fell right on the cusp between dewy and sexy. He was a classic teen idol — he looked like Sean Cassidy with hair gel — and when you’re sitting on top of that world, surrounded by screaming fans, it always seems, at least within the entertainment industry, like you can conquer anything.

It was all but forgone that Efron would get a crack at movie stardom, and he did, but when »

Seth Rogen can do very little wrong at this point in his career. He is having a massive weekend with Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising having debuted with a lot of critical praise and Preacher is airing on AMC tonight, which he co-wrote and produced. Zac Efron has also returned for the Neighbors sequel and has really found a home for his career in rated R comedies. The pair have reunited again, but this time it is to tease the possibility of a Neighbors trilogy, kind of.

In order to help promote the release of Neighbors 2, which came out in theaters on Friday, Universal Pictures has released a new promo video featuring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron doing their usual bit of goofing around with one another, but with a fun little twist. In this edition of The Week in Trailers, we’ve got new trailers for Star Trek Beyond, Ghostbusters, Sausage Party and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, as well as debut trailers for Trainspotting 2 and more…

Well kick things off this week with Danny Boyle announcing that production had started on his sequel to 1994’s Trainspotting with this debut trailer. Not really much to see here from the movie, but it’s enough to whet your appetite before Renton and crew head back to the big screen…

…Moving over to Paul Feig’s reboot of Ghostbusters and Sony Pictures released the second trailer for the movie as well as a new International trailer. Sausage Party Trailer Puts an R-Rated Spin on Pixar Movies

19 May 2016 11:23 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sausage Party is the first&#160R-rated CG animated movie in history, and it looks horrifying. Especially if you love food. This supermarket adventure is about one sausage leading a group of products on a quest to discover the truth about their existence and what&#160really happens when they become chosen to leave the grocery store. The film features an epic ensemble of vocal talents including Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Paul Rudd, Nick Kroll, David Krumholtz, Edward Norton and Salma Hayek.

Earlier this year, we were treated to the gloriously offensive red band trailer for Sausage Party. Today, we get the green band 'all-audience' trailer from Sony, which cuts back on the raunch but not the gore. This is still one gruesome blood bath of food. And it's incredibly disturbing. Preacher episodes 1-3 spoiler-free review

AMC's Preacher is a darkly funny ode to the source material. Here's our American chums' spoiler-free review of the first 3 episodes...

Preacher is one of those comic book properties that really sizzles on the page. Its panels brim with the kind of excessive violence and profanity that would make Quentin Tarantino proud. Penned by Garth Ennis and drawn by Steve Dillon, the Vertigo title is considered by many to be a cult classic. An imprint of DC Comics, Vertigo had a way of truly pushing the storytelling envelope, especially in the 90s. Hellblazer comes to mind, as does Animal Man. Like those titles, Preacher had a gritty sensibility that didn’t exactly lend itself to episodic television. Not for lack of trying over the years, though.

It’s quite fascinating, really, that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were the ones who were finally able to breathe life »

AMC unveils the first four minutes of Preacher

In less than a week, AMC’s adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comic book series Preacher will be making its debut, but ahead of its release, the network has unveiled the first four minutes of the show’s premiere episode. The explosive clip teases the show’s dark sense of humour and is sure to raise a handful of questions among non-comic book readers that will be answered in due time. See the clip, which features Dominic Cooper’s Jesse Custer, the titular preacher, here…

TV Review: ‘Preacher’

18 May 2016 11:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

If every TV pilot episode serves as a show’s calling card, dropping clues about its overall tone and potential, then “Preacher’s” is singed around the edges, and sulfur-scented. In the 90-minute premiere of the new hour-long AMC series, someone spontaneously combusts into a shower of goo; one of the main protagonists guzzles blood directly out of a man’s chest; and a child responds to witnessing a death-blow by grinning and yelling, “Awesome!” It’s precisely what fans of the controversial cult comic-book, which debuted in 1995, expect.

There are a number of reasons “Preacher” hasn’t been made into a film or TV series before now. Strictly adhering to the original story, as created by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon (who serve as co-executive producers on the TV series), is an unwieldy and expensive proposition. Various cinematic versions of the tale have been bouncing around in »

Review: Why Seth Rogen's 'Preacher' was smart to move away from the comics

17 May 2016 6:00 AM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

We live in an age of miracles when it comes to allegedly unadaptable books actually being adapted. For years, fantasy fans assumed no one could do right by George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books, but then Game of Thrones became a phenomenon for readers and non-readers alike. Diana Gabaldon's Outlander books seemed too larded with historical detail (and the occasional extremely graphic rape scene) to seem plausible as a TV show, but the Starz version has won over most of her audience. Now comes AMC's Preacher, based on an acclaimed '90s comic book series, by writer Garth Ennis and artist Steve Dillon, whose apparent barriers to adaptation are so numerous and daunting that they make A Song of Ice and Fire look like Bridget Jones' Diary. The comic is deeply offensive on both spiritual and aesthetic levels — its recurring cast includes both »

Seth Rogen has successfully made the leap to directing, helming the endlessly imaginative, celebrity packed, post-apocalyptic meta film “This is the End,” which he followed with “The Interview,” which basically resulted in North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un threatening the American government if they didn’t halt the release of the film in theaters.
