Rihanna, Nyong'o and DuVeray Team for Netflix Movie Based on a Meme

22 May 2017 6:52 PM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Last month, a 2014 photo of Rihanna and Lupita Nyong'o, who were both sitting in the front row of a Miu Miu fashion show, went viral, with several social media users crafting a movie idea around this image alone. It all started with one Twitter user dubbed "@1800Sadgal" calling for a heist movie where Rihanna would play the "tough-as-nails leader/master thief", with Lupita Nyong'o portraying "the genius computer hacker." During the Cannes Film Festival, Netflix actually picked up this project, which will star both actresses with Ava DuVernay set to direct from a script by Insecure creator Issa Rae.

Entertainment Weekly reports that Netflix closed a deal for the concept of this Meme Movie, which still doesn't have a title, during a "dramatic negotiation session." There were several other buyers bidding for the project, but Netflix won with an "aggressive bid" that secured the rights. Another report from Vanity Fair »

Snatched Nude Scene Left Amy Schumer's Brother Traumatized

11 May 2017 9:42 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Judging from our own comment section, both on the site and at Facebook, there aren't too many Amy Schumer fans visiting us on a daily basis. Either that, or they're staying hidden for fear of persecution. So our next story will either have some running and hiding, while others will be smiling from ear to ear as they race to the local theater to get a peek at Ms. Schumer's exposed breast this Friday in the new Mother's Day comedy Snatched. Yes, you heard that right. For the first time in a movie, the popular comedian is doing a nude scene of sorts. While we can't confirm that there will be nipples exposed, the comedian herself does confirm that the scene in question left her poor brother gagging. And apparently, he may never recover.

Amy Schumer is the first to take the sting out of any jokes coming her way. »

Schumer spoke with Et's Cameron Mathison at the Los Angeles premiere of Snatched on Wednesday, and she opened up about how she's going to miss spending so much time with her on-screen mom and close friend.

"We've been emotional about it all day. This is the end of the line for us," Schumer said. "We will still see each other, but not as much, so we're sad. We're sad it's coming to an end, you know? We're crazy about each other."

Television comedies are a dime a dozen, though a supernatural comedy featuring Adam Scott (Parks And Recreation, Party Down, Krampus) and Craig Robinson (This Is The End, Brooklyn Nine-nine) sounds to me like a frighteningly good time.  It's being reported today that Fox has ordered Ghosted, a single-camera series, with Ally Walker and Adeel Akhtar also set to star in a show... Snatched Director Jonathan Levine On The Amy Schumer-Goldie Hawn Comedy

9 May 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

While the upcoming R-rated comedy Snatched will probably get more attention for its two stars, Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn--the latter making her first big screen appearance in almost 15 years--the man behind the camera is director Jonathan Levine, who continues to diversify his filmography with this female-driven comedy.

Levine first got attention for his early indie The Wackness, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008, and he followed that by adapting the young adult zombie romance Warm Bodies, then making the cancer comedy 50/50 and the Christmas comedy The Night Before, the latter two with Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

In Snatched, Amy Schumer plays Emily Middleton, who has plans to go to South America on a romantic trip with her boyfriend, but when he breaks up with her she asks her mother Linda (Hawn) to make the trip with her.  Once there, the two are constantly fighting, but »

Sony Distribution Chief Rory Bruer Retires After 40 Years at Studio

Rory Bruer is retiring as head of worldwide distribution at Sony Pictures after four decades at the studio.

Sony does not plan to directly replace him. Bruer, who has deep ties with theater owners, will segue into an advisory role at the studio. Adrian Smith and Steven O’Dell will handle domestic and international distribution, respectively. They will report directly to Josh Greenstein, president of worldwide marketing and distribution.

“Though I knew in my heart that the time was right to begin to pull back, it’s hard to let go of a place that has been a part of my life for so long — so when they asked me to stay on as an advisor, I jumped at the chance,” Bruer wrote in a letter to staff. “Not everybody gets to begin this next chapter on their own terms, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity.”

Lion King: Seth Rogen & Billy Eichner Will Play Pumbaa & Timon In New Film

25 April 2017 3:32 PM, PDT | LRMonline.com | See recent LRM Online news »

Whenever Disney decides to revisit one of its previous successes, it runs a huge risk. Will audiences connect with the new film the way they did with the old one? Could they even hope to capture a fraction of what they did in that original take? That was the case with this year’s Beauty and the Beast, and while it wasn’t a perfect film, it seems like the House of Mouse is doing a pretty solid job adapting their films for a modern audience. One of the many big films that is on the horizon is Jon Favreau’s The Lion King.

The film already has two characters officially cast. Taking on Simba is Lando Calrissian himself Donald Glover, and returning to play Mufasa is the man himself, James Earl Jones. There are, however, still a ton of iconic actors needing to be cast, many of whom have »

What is James Franco Reading?

13 April 2017 4:51 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

A extensive look at all those movies James Franco directed.

James Franco has done a lot of things, we’ve heard. Following a successful turn on Judd Apatow’s Freaks and Geeks and a well-received starring spot on a TNT biopic on James Dean, he turned immediately to a litany of pursuits: from playwriting and English degrees to painting and directing no less than ten feature-lengths. The latter project interested me. Were they any good? In Franco’s Rolling Stone profile last year, Jonah Weiner ran around a thesaurus of words like “dizzying,” “indefatigable“ and, wait for it, “multihyphenate” to describe his subject but none of those words mean very much. Paul Klee painted over a thousand paintings in the penultimate last year of his life. So could I. So what?

“What did we do to deserve James Franco?,” asked Rex Reed in a slightly different era. Back then, even the The Guardian agreed with Jared Kushner »

Can Seth Rogen's Invincible break Marvel and DC's superhero stranglehold?

10 April 2017 11:30 PM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg are to adapt Robert Kirkman’s Invincible series for the big screen. Could this be the shakeup the comic-book adaptation needs?

Marvel and DC have often been a little prickly when it comes to others infringing on terrain they consider their own. A New York Daily News report estimated in 2013 that the two publishers had sued at least 35 people over the previous decade, just for using the term “superhero”. What’s perhaps more surprising is that, despite the current boom in comic-book movies, the big two haven’t really needed to call in the lawyers to ensure their virtual duopoly at the multiplex. Of the top 20 highest-grossing superhero movies of all time, all but one are based on a property that originally appeared in comics published by either Marvel or DC. And the exception – 2004 Pixar animation The Incredibles – is in any case now owned by Marvel parent company Disney. »

Invincible was created by Kirkman alongside Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker back in 2003 and, besides The Walking Dead, it is Kirkman’s longest running title, now on its 133rd issue. The story follows Mark Grayson, a normal high school student with just one difference between him and his peers — his father is the most powerful superhero on the planet, and he, too, will inherit his own set of superpowers.

Robert Kirkman, who is best known for creating The Walking Dead, is about to bring one of his other comic creations to the world of live-action. His second-longest-running series, Invincible, is headed to the big screen at Universal, and the movie is going to be written and directed by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. It wasn't said explicitly in the report, but it looks like this will be the latest R-rated comic book movie to enter development, following the success of Deadpool and Logan.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Seth Rogen and Even Goldberg have been tapped to write, direct and produce the Invincible movie, with Robert Kirkman on board to produce, via his company Skybound Entertainment. Invincible has been running for more than 130 issues and is set to conclude later this year, but it looks like the Image Comics series will live on as a movie franchise, assuming this first movie goes well. »

Robert Kirkman’s Invincible Being Brought To The Big Screen By Seth Rogen And Evan Goldberg

4 April 2017 3:01 PM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Even if you don’t read comic books, chances are you’ll be familiar with Robert Kirkman’s name. The Image Comics scribe is the creator of The Walking Dead, a series which has become a global phenomenon since being brought to television by AMC. However, what you may not know is that Kirkman has another long-running comic called Invincible, which is also well past the #100 issue mark.

It tells the story of Mark Grayson, a half human/half alien teenager who develops superpowers and becomes “invincible” in a world full of larger than life characters. His adventures have taken place on Earth and in the far reaches of space, and while it’s clearly inspired by Spider-Man and mainstream superhero universes such as those created by Marvel and DC Comics, Invincible also features some seriously graphic violence amidst epic action scenes. For that reason, it’s always been hard »
