No Surprises from Straub.
pauluswiggus2 November 2020
Straub's first film after the death of longtime collaborator, Danièle Huillet. This is stylistically very similar to much of Straub-Huillet's previous work, like Sicilia!, with lengthy dialogue sequences, Brechtian in approach, with no camera movement or 'action' at all. Two men stand in a forrest telling a story taken from Greek mythology (told in first-person, although the setting appears to be contemporary). The story is delivered in monotone voices, with almost no facial expressions from the actors.

This is 'challenging' filmmaking that asks a lot of the audience. Not an entertaining film in the typical sense, but at only 26 mins, this may be a good introduction to Straub's work.
