Clash of the Titans – trailer

Clash of the Titans

Directed by: Louis Leterrier

Starring: Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Sam Worthington

Rating: Nr

Release Date: March 26, 2010

Trailer Score: 5/10

My Thoughts: The original Harry Hamlin stinker is one of my most favoritist movies of all time ever dating back from my childhood (along with The Dark Crystal, Krull and The Last Unicorn). So I feel especially well prepared to critique the modernized, CGI stinker version of that god-awful, fantastic pile of crap from 1981. Now, here’s what the new, spiffy trailer does Right: A. The Giant Scorpions. Sure, they’re a wee large and it looks like the screenwriters took some liberties with how they actually fit into the plot, but the original movie is just one big liberty taken after another, so now I guess we’re taking liberties with liberties…which, I suppose is like taking a grain of salt with another grain of salt. »

2009 in review: Television

12 December 2009 4:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

While talent shows provided national talking points, it was a slew of dramas that really gripped this viewer

This year I'm devoting the top 10 to drama, partly because it feels as though the genre is having a harder time of television's indisputable Hard Times than, for example, anything featuring Cheryl Cole, but also because, despite this, there have been some truly extraordinary TV dramas in 2009.

Though this decision did seem slightly perverse when, looking back over the year's reviews, I noted an unprecedented amount of coverage of pretty much anything but drama – in marked contrast to, say, 1999, when I started my TV-reviewing career and when the big drama of the week, whether a one-off mini-series or a soap episode, was invariably the cornerstone of a review.

Regular readers will know that I am rarely snobby about populist/reality telly, so I was just as gripped by Susan Boyle's Britain's Got Talent »

Five Minutes of Heaven

Directed by:  Oliver Hirschbiegel

Cast: Liam Neeson, James Nesbitt

Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins

Rating: Unrated

Release Date: November 13, 2009

Plot: A murderer (Neeson) who killed for the Ulster Volunteer Force (sort of the opposing force to the Ira) prepares to meet with the brother of his victim (Nesbitt).

Who’S It For? Come on, it has Liam Neeson!  Assuming you’re not tired of “the troubles”, you want to see it.

Expectations: I’m a fan of Nesbitt after seeing his performance in Bloody Sunday, and how can you not expect great things from Liam Neeson?  So yeah, I was hoping for a tour de force two man acting showdown.

Scorecard (0-10)

Actors:

Liam Neeson as Alistair Little:  Neeson plays the adult version of Little, after his time in prison.   Despite the set up of the film, the two leads spend very little time together, so »

Jonathan Rhys Meyers to team up with Kevin Bacon in new comedy (IrishCentral)

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is set to star alongside Kevin Bacon in a new comedy, “Whole Lotta Sole.” The film will begin shooting in Belfast, Ireland in 2010. “The Tudors” star Rhys Meyers will play a thief who attempts to steal from a fish market, and takes Bacon’s character hostage in the process. According to Entertainment Tonight, the Irish actor’s character fights to stay one step ahead of both the police and a local gangster. “My Dog Skip” director Jay Russell has signed on to direct the comedy, which was written by Thomas Gallagher and “Hotel Rwanda” screenwriter Terry George. "This is a great comedy project, not like Terry's usual political fare,” Russell said. “It's very exciting to have one of the best young actors today, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, teamed up with one of the greats, Kevin Bacon." Review: Five Minutes Of Heaven

6 November 2009 4:30 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

When one thinks of a powerful film, what comes to mind? An epic saga? A grandiose drama? A hard-hitting film of controversy? For me, the films that have the greatest impact, the films that offer the most honest and realistic portrayal of contemporary concerns, are those that present themselves in their purest form. All the fancy camera work, all the flashy visual style and emotionally-charged music in the world will never take the place of a powerful story. And, that story does not necessarily need to be complex.

As they say, less is more. Five Minutes Of Heaven is 90 minutes of raw, unfiltered human emotion. Not the over-done, exaggerated type that makes for good Hollywood drama, but the kind that makes an audience sit up in their seats. The kind of tactile human sensory emotion that makes an audience stare, unflinching, mesmerized into the lives of another human being. Plain and simple. »

TV Review: BBC America’s ‘Occupation’ Features Great Performances

18 October 2009 10:32 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The American perspective on the war in Iraq has been well-documented in feature films and TV movies, but I was intrigued at the idea of seeing a British film about the Middle East, especially one with great actors like James Nesbitt and Stephen Graham. Sadly, “Occupation” is a bit of a disappointment. The lead actors almost save it but a weak script, lackluster supporting cast, and stupid scheduling choice hurt the project.

Television Rating: 3.0/5.0

Occupation” is not your typical Iraq War movie - and, yes, there have been enough already that there’s usually a model for these things. Most of them fall into one of two categories - “over there” or “back home”. The most interesting thing about the set-up for “Occupation” is that it’s a little bit of both, telling a story of three men who leave Iraq but find that they’re drawn back to the Middle East. »

Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen Will Show Us 'The Way'

2 October 2009 1:05 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

No matter what he does, in my mind, Emilio Estevez will always be Gordon Bombay (Minneapolis, Minnesota), coach of the Mighty Ducks. And who would've thought that the Breakfast Club actor would've turned out to be a decent director too? Though the reviews were mixed on Bobby, there's no doubt that Estevez at least knows how to operate behind the camera, even if he's not the greatest screenwriter. Variety announces Estevez's The Way (his fourth feature as writer and director), a family-drama starring Martin Sheen (The Departed), Deborah Kara Unger (Silent Hill), and James Nesbitt (Five Minutes of Heaven). Spanish actors Angela Molina and Carlos Leal (Broken Embraces), Simon Andreu (Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), and Eusebio Lazaro (Pan's Labyrinth) also star in the story of "Tom Avery, a Californian ophthalmologist who travels to France to reclaim the body of his estranged son, who died in a storm in the Pyrenees, »

The Motion/Captured Review: 'The Baader-Meinhof Complex'

5 September 2009 2:30 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

It's fitting that I'd review this film on the same day as "Five Minutes Of Heaven," even though I saw them months apart.  I saw the Neeson film at Sundance this year, and I saw "The Baader-Meinhof Complex" here at my house about six days ago.  Aside from thematic similarities, they both spring from the same DNA.  Bernd Eichinger, the producer and screenwriter of this movie, was also the producer of Oliver Hirschbiegel's "Downfall."  Eichinger casts a huge shadow over the German film industry, having worked with basically everyone, so it's little wonder there's some overlap with these two movies.  Coincidence »
