Melissa McCarthy to Star in R-Rated Puppet Comedy “The Happytime Murders”

Melissa McCarthy in “Mike & Molly”

Melissa McCarthy is about to kick some puppet ass. Deadline reports that the Oscar-nominated actress has signed on to star in and produce STXfilms’ “The Happytime Murders,” an R-rated puppet movie. Since the film takes place in a world where puppets and humans co-exist, we’re betting the queen of physical comedy is going to have some epic battles with puppets.

Set in the underbelly of La, “The Happytime Murders” follows two “clashing” detectives, one human (McCarthy) and one puppet. According to the source, they’re “forced to work together to figure out who is brutally murdering the former cast of ‘The Happytime Gang,’ a beloved classic puppet show.” The project sounds destined to be a cult classic.

Melissa McCarthy is the reigning queen of comedy, and we believe she will make ‘The Happytime Murders’ the kind of hysterical, edgy, viral event that audiences today crave,” said Adam Fogelson, Chairman of STXfilms. “This is the kind of script and material that was made for Melissa’s smart and boundary-pushing sensibilities.”

McCarthy added, “When a really good script combines puppet strippers, Los Angeles’ underbelly, and comedy, it’s like my fever dream has finally come true.”

Brian Henson (“Sid the Science Kid,” “Muppet Treasure Island”) will direct.

McCarthy’s next big screen projects include “Life of the Party,” a college-set comedy she co-wrote, and Marielle Heller’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” a dark comedy about a journalist who forges letters from late writers and actors. Check out our cross-post explaining why McCarthy is considered such a valuable asset at the box office.

Melissa McCarthy to Star in R-Rated Puppet Comedy “The Happytime Murders” was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

The Reality of Ryan’s Toy Review: It’s Hard Work

As a parent I’ve seen more children’s TV than I’d care to mention. If there’s one thing I’ve figured out about the 3-7 year old demographic it’s that its close to impossible to tell what these kids are going to latch onto. Seriously. That’s the only constant I know. No one knew while creating the Teletubbies that they would take off. No one could have really predicted if Sid the Science Kid would be successful. Yes, I’m sure there are analysts at work right now studying trends and doing the math on what might project well with little kids, but

Henson Co. Busy With Wide-Ranging Slate of Film, TV and Theater Projects
The Jim Henson Co. sits in the old Charlie Chaplin lot on La Brea Avenue in Hollywood, with a giant Kermit the Frog perched at its entrance, even though the Muppets were sold to Disney in 2004. Brian Henson's Evolution Of Puppetry

Feature Andrew Blair 28 Aug 2013 - 07:23

Andrew reports back on Brian Henson's session at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, on the evolution of puppetry...

That Puppet Game Show is the unlikely combination of B-list celebrities and new creations from the Jim Henson Company. Brian Henson, director of modern classic The Muppet Christmas Carol and 'How to Introduce the Unique Stylings of Tim Curry to children' (aka Muppet Treasure Island), is a puppeteer on the show, and as such was around to give a presentation at the Edinburgh TV Festival about the history of his father's creations.

So, first of all, Brian Henson was in the room. This was very exciting. I mean, he's Brian Henson. The guy Exec-Produced Farscape.

Starting with a rare clip from a 1956 episode of Sam and Friends (featuring a pre-recorded back projection and the then non-gender-or-species specific Kermit puppet), Brian Henson documented his father's approach

Comcast Spotlights On-Demand Service With “Summer Of Kids” Initiative

  • Deadline TV
The No. 1 cable company will flood its on-demand menu with children’s shows in July — part of an effort to demonstrate to parents that they don’t have to buy a streaming service from Netflix or Amazon to find programming that will keep kids occupied in front of the TV or a mobile device. The “Summer Of Kids” plan follows Comcast’s “Watchathon” event in March that highlighted the virtues of on-demand. In the new campaign, Comcast says it will offer content from “every major kids network and brand,” including more than 1,000 downloadable TV shows and films. In conjunction with the “Summer Of Kids” campaign, Comcast is introducing guides in collaboration with Common Sense Media to help families find age-appropriate fare. That should give parents “ultimate peace of mind for safer, smarter viewing across devices,” says Comcast Cable’s programming VP Maggie Suniewick. For the last two weeks of July

Guest Post: On Oxygen Masks, Happiness, and "Teeny Tiny Dogs"

Halle Stanford, Executive Producer and Executive Vice President of Children’s Entertainment at the Jim Henson Company (which produced the Amazon original pilot, Teeny Tiny Dogs), shares the key to family happiness: the oxygen mask.

As a mother of two boys (a teen and a toddler) and owner of two small dogs, I grab those “Mommy Moments” whenever I can find them. You know, hiding in my bathroom for 15 minutes with the latest Game of Thrones book (“Mommy has to go potty. I’ll be riiiight back!”). Mommy Moments make me one happy momma.

I learned this happy parent lesson years ago when I was going through a difficult divorce, and was worried about the happiness of my son. A wise friend told me, “You know what Rabbi Airplane says? Put your oxygen mask on before your kids. Your son will be happy if you are happy.” And lo, my pal was right.
