The Notable Films of 2010: Part Seven

29 December 2009 7:16 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Mother and Child

Opens: 2010

Cast: Naomi Watts, Annette Bening, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington

Director: Rodrigo Garcia

Summary: A tale of a mother and daughter, separated at birth, who struggle with the damage done by the most important person missing in their lives while a young African-Americn woman deals with an unwanted pregnancy and the adoption process.

Analysis: Scoring rave reviews in Toronto, the $7 million latest effort of Rodrigo Garcia ("Nine Lives," "Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her") once again shows off his skill at weaving multiple narratives together in clever and unexpected ways. At its heart it's an emotional family drama, but Garcia excels with his female characters which makes the involvement of Naomi Watts, Kerry Washington and especially Annette Benning thrilling.

The few criticisms levelled at the film were toward some pacing and credibility issues in the last act, but otherwise praised it for not »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Six

27 December 2009 10:09 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

The Last Airbender

Opens: July 2nd 2010

Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Jackson Rathbone, Dev Patel

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Summary: A live-action film based on the Nickelodeon animated TV series. In a fantastic world where civilisation exists as four great empires, a reluctant young child sets out on a perilous journey to restore balance to a world torn apart by war.

Analysis: It has been quite the decade for M. Night Shyamalan, who started it as a household name with the label of a modern-day Hitchcock thanks to the likes of "The Sixth Sense" and "Signs". Today he's considered more of a one-trick pony and in some cases a punchline due to rampant stories of egomania run wild and a series of much derided onscreen flops like "Lady in the Water" and "The Happening".

Thus 'Airbender' marks a potential return to form for the helmer. An adaptation of the hit »

Colin Farrell To Spend Holidays In Ireland With Newborn Son And Girlfriend

23 December 2009 12:39 AM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Former hellraiser and Irish bad boy Colin Farrell is reportedly spending the holidays this year in his home country with his family along with his newborn son and girlfriend, Polish actress Alicja Bachleda.  The couple, who met earlier this year on the set of their film, "Ondine" welcomed their son, Henry Tadeusz, on Oct. 7 in Los Angeles.

A source tells Ireland's Herald web site that the couple decided to make the trip in order for everyone in Colin's family to finally meet his bouncing baby boy.  The source says, "They wanted to wait until Henry was a bit older and up for such a long flight home, and Colin's really looking forward to showing him off to everyone."

The private actor only confirmed Alicja's pregnancy last September at the Toronto International Film Festival.  He also has another son, 6-year-old James with former model Kim Bordenave.

At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. We can expect a surge in film productions starts in January, but the month of December is short on film productions, yet we still have a trio of titles that are worth following. - At the beginning of every month, Ioncinema.com's "Tracking Shot" features a handful of projects that we feel are worth signaling out and that are moments away from lensing. Tiff 2009 Day 8: Neil Jordan's Ondine

30 November 2009 1:32 AM, PST | ioncinema | See recent ioncinema news »

I can't quite wrap my head around Neil Jordan's latest offering - clearly a fairy tale for adults that could easily play well for children, Ondine sounds good (Sigur Ros) and looks good (Christopher Doyle), but I didn't much care for the end result. - I can't quite wrap my head around Neil Jordan's latest offering - clearly a fairy tale for adults that could easily play well for children, Ondine sounds good (Sigur Ros) and looks good (Christopher Doyle), but I didn't much care for the end result.
