Trivia

During the making of "Glory," the Court 13 production crew lived amid some 25 people in a mildewed, post-Katrina house they named the Hotel Bastardo. One day it was ransacked, and among the stolen items were the hard drives containing all the footage shot so far for Glory at Sea (2008)_. So the filmmakers posted fliers in the neighborhood offering a reward for the stolen footage, and soon after got a call from the thieves who arranged a no-questions-asked meeting at a nearby restaurant. Some of the Court 13 crew arrived with cash bu ended up waiting for hours, getting drunk and telling their sad story to the patrons. Angered, these loyal customers went home and came back to the bar with knives and a shotgun. Eventually, a large man arrived, followed by his companion, a 4-foot-5" transvestite. who turned out to be in charge. The deal went down without trouble, but as the thieves were leaving, one of the local cast members from 'Glory' approached them with the shotgun and warned, "If anyone ever goes in that house again, they're gonna have to answer to God." This lyric, mythic short is considered by many to be the harbinger of Zeitlin's 2012 independent feature film, "Beasts of the Southern Wild" (an unexpected breakout success on every critic's must see list.) That said, I found it a cathartic, beautiful work in its own right. Lose yourself in the experience, *have no expectations*, and it is (in my opinion) even more powerful than "Beasts"...it is certainly less constructed. This short piece tells your heart a story, and your brain follows after. Benh Zeitlin and his Court 13 cohort pull off a magic trick by creating and assembling scenes as if they were found objects, yet there is plot and narrative (literally--the narration is vital to absorbing the tale) enough for the most linear of thinkers. "Glory at Sea" is included as an extra on the "Beasts" blu-ray; I recommend watching it *after* "Beasts".
