Can ‘Spotlight’ Score the Rare Oscar Hat Trick?

By Patrick Shanley

Managing Editor

Director Tom McCarthy’s true story drama about Boston Globe reporters investigating the local Catholic archdiocese and the surrounding child molestation scandal, Spotlight, is a serious Oscar contender, particularly for its star-studded cast.

The film, which won the best ensemble performance award at this month’s Gotham Awards and the Robert Altman award at the Independent Spirit Awards, boasts serious contenders in the best supporting actor category led by performances from last year’s best actor nominee Michael Keaton and former Oscar-nom Mark Ruffalo.

It seems likely that both Keaton and Ruffalo will receive nominations this year, which would be quite a feat in itself as no film has had two of its actors nominated in the best supporting actor category since Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley both earned noms for 1991’s Bugsy (though the supporting actress category has had a number of films with

Mercy (2014)

Written by: Matt Greenberg, Stephen King (Short Story)

Directed by: Peter Cornwell

Cast: Chandler Riggs (George), Dylan McDermott (Jim Swann), Mark Duplass (Uncle Lanning), Francess O’Connor (Rebecca), Joel Courtney (Buddy), Hana Hayes (Girl Next Door), Amanda Walsh (Charlotte), Chris Browning (Frank), Shirley Knight (Mercy)

If you notice from the credits, “Mercy” is a feature length film that is based on a short story from the modern day master of horror himself, Stephen King. In my humble opinion, I don’t think that Stephen King is one of those guys who you either love or hate. Regardless, of whether you judge him exclusively within the horror genre or when films based on his work crossed out of horror, such as “The Green Mile”. There is something from Stephen King for everyone, and at least one of the many things he wrote that resonates

First Trailers for Mockingbird and Mercy

  • DailyDead
Jason Blum’s new label, Bh Tilt, is wasting no time in rolling out eagerly anticipated genre titles that have been stuck in picture purgatory. Today, less than a month after Bh Tilt launched, the banner made three titles available on Digital HD: Joe Johnston’s Not Safe for Work, the Chandler Riggs-starring Mercy, and Bryan Bertino’s Mockingbird, and the latter two have released trailers to go with their debuts.

The first movie from writer/director Bryan Bertino since 2008’s The Strangers, Mockingbird will be released on Blu-ray and DVD only at Walmart on October 21st, in addition to its current availability on Digital HD. In Mockingbird, “three individuals each receive an anonymous, unmarked video camera and a horrific ultimatum to continue filming… or die. Experience the terror through the eyes of these unsuspecting victims, with a chain of found-footage events so real and absolutely dreadful, you’ll

The Fear Monger: M. Night Syamalan's Micro Horror, Turkish Boogeymen And Zombeavers' Oscar Campaign

Happy March, stokers of all things flammable. Where I live, it.s Mardi Gras season, so the mood is a little more festive than the usual dripping darkness. Plus, red velvet king cake. So forgive me if I sit back and stare into space while you read through the following pages. If you read through the whole article, you.ll find out about some genuinely interesting things happening in in the genre, and there will be king cake for you at the end. The king cake is not a lie. Because I love Stephen King and because upcoming adaptations of his works are currently plentiful, here are a couple of tidbits about that. Blumhouse.s Mercy, starring Dylan McDermott and Mark Duplass, isn.t leaving Universal.s shelf anytime soon, and they.re considering tinkering with reshoots on The Strangers.s director Bryan Bertino.s thriller Mockingbird, but nothing is

Updates on Blumhouse's Stephen King Adaptation Mercy and Bryan Bertino's Mockingbird

The Hollywood Reporter just issued an odd little article which adds some insight into the films produced by Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions. In it were updates on two projects that are currently sitting on the shelf: Mercy and Mockingbird.

According to THR, the Stephen King adaptation Mercy, directed by Haunting in Connecticut's Peter Cornwell and starring Dylan McDermott, Frances O'Connor, Chandler Riggs, Joel Courtney, Shirley Knight, and Chris Browning, finished shooting a year ago and is among the Blumhouse films sitting on Universal’s shelf.

Studio chairman Donna Langley says the studio still is not counting it out. What does that mean exactly? Probably that they will just dump it on home video and move along.

Synopsis

Based on a short story by Stephen King, Mercy tells the tale of two young boys ("The Walking Dead’s" Chandler Riggs and Super 8’s Joel Courtney) who move with
