Lionsgate open to future "Saw" films

8 December 2011 11:01 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

It's easy to argue that the "Saw" franchise is the biggest horror film series of our generation. The seventh installment, "Saw 3D" was released in 2010 and promised to be the last in the series, but we never really expected that to last. This past year was the first time Lionsgate didn't release a new "Saw" flick for Halloween in the past eight years, and now it seems like the franchise is seeing some renewed life. In a recent interview, an exec at Lionsgate said the company is open to an eighth film for the franchise.

"I'm sure, some day, you'll see 'Saw' back in the picture," Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns recently told CNBC, according to Bloody Disgusting.

It's an interesting use of words, though. Burns easily could have said, "Oh yeah, we have a new 'Saw' film lined up for next year," but instead he makes it sound like »

The Saw Franchise May Be Making A Comeback

7 December 2011 9:24 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

When Saw 3D, the last film in the franchise, hit theaters in October of 2010 its box office numbers were rather surprising. While many long running series tend to see their final installment make an insane amount of cash (just look at Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 from this summer), the performance of Saw 3D was rather underwhelming, making only $22 million in its opening weekend and by the end of its run it was the second worst performer of all the sequels, beating only Saw VI. With that in mind, it was fitting that the franchise would not return, as it was plainly obvious that people just didn't care anymore. Apparently nobody told Lionsgate about that. Studio Vice Chairman Michael Burns recently made a stop to CNBC (via Bloody Disgusting) to talk about the potential merger between Lionsgate and Summit. But while there wasn't much to say about the »

Forest Whitaker Takes The Pawn With Michael Chiklis In A New Indie

28 November 2011 5:34 PM, PST | icelebz.com | See recent iCelebz news »

Forest Whitaker clearly enjoyed butting heads with Michael Chiklis during his brief tenure spent on Us cop drama The Shield. Because the pair is teaming back up again for crime pic Pawn.

David A Armstrong - who has largely been a cinematographer or second unit director on films such as Dead Awake and Saw VI - is stepping up to the main chair for this one, which revolves around a hostage situation that quickly goes very badly wrong. Trapped in the middle is an ex-con who becomes part of a nasty game between the local police, federal authorities and the mob.

Jay Anthony White wrote the script, which has also attracted the likes of Common and Ray Liotta.

Chiklis, who is also producing the movie via his new company, was last seen in Eagle Eye and will next crop up in Parker. Whitaker was most recently in The Experiment and has Catch .44 coming up. »

21st Century Horror: In Trivial Pursuit of a New Kind of Terror

28 October 2011 2:58 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Late at night an unlit deserted street is molested by a cold icy wind as it scoops up leaves from the gutters and sporadically hammers them, brown and red, into the faded grey brickwork of it’s adorning buildings. The pitch black is broken as something orange and yellow glimmers and dances against the colourless cobblestones. A dull light is radiating from the downstairs of one the terraced houses. Barely visible through a frost bitten windowpane, a group of people are sitting around gathering warmth from a crackling fireplace. Emanating from its hearth is a dim flickering iridescent light, illuminating their figures, fighting against the inky blackness of the cold October night, casting distorted twisted trembling shadows on the walls as they sit and listen to each other spin yarns about the macabre, morose and supernatural qualities of the surrounding area, talking of the Ghosts, ghouls and gremlins that occupy »

Weekend Box Office – Paranormal Activity 3 Claims October Opening Record with $54 Million

23 October 2011 10:06 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier this week, it seemed like Paranormal Activity 3 was looking at an opening weekend in the $35-$40 million range, or just slightly less than what its predecessor took in on this week last year.  Instead, the three-quel has crushed all projections with an estimated take of $54 million from 3,321 locations.  At this point that stands as the highest October debut and the biggest supernatural horror opening of all-time, unseating 2010’s Paranormal Activity 2, of course. Title Weekend Total 1 Paranormal Activity 3 $54,000,000 $54 2 Real Steel $11,300,000 $67.2 3 Footloose $10,900,000 $30.9 4 The Three Musketeers $8,800,000 $8.8 5 Ides of March $4,900,000 $29.1 6 Dolphin Tale $4,500,000 $64.6 7 Moneyball $4,100,000 $63.7 8 Johnny English $3,800,000 $3.8 9 The Thing $3,100,000 $14 10 50/50 $2,800,000 $28.7 Remember when Halloween belonged to the Saw franchise?  Not anymore.  For three years running the biggest name in horror has been Paranormal Activity, the low-budget franchise that began breaking records on this week back in 2009.  Actually, on this week three years ago, the first Paranormal Activity had been around for about a month: »

Don't Shoot! 8 Subjects Never to Record

17 October 2011 10:34 AM, PDT | Movies.com | See recent Movies.com news »

After seven years of Saw ringing in the holiday, it’s about time something truly scary gets to do the honor --something like Paranormal Activity. For the past two years, the Paranormal movies have shared the Halloween spotlight alongside Saw VI and Saw 3D, but this time around Paranormal Activity 3 gets the spotlight all to itself. As someone who used to work as a cameraperson for a local news station, I can assure you that whether you’re merely looking for a man-on-the-street interview or perhaps catching someone red-handed in the middle of a crime, the large majority gets pretty testy when recording devices are involved. Lucky for us, the film industry highlights a few touchy subjects that are bound to raise some serious problems should they be forced in...

The Halloween Without A Saw

6 October 2011 4:15 PM, PDT | FamousMonsters of Filmland | See recent Famous Monsters of Filmland news »

The year was 2004.  I was a freshman in college.  There I was, cruising around the internet, looking for interesting movie trailers and/or porn, when I stumbled upon something that looked like a combination of both, more akin to a snuff film than a major studio release.

The trailer for the original Saw featured perhaps the most iconic image from the movie, an image that would actually open the entire film and set a highwater mark for the franchise that many would argue hasn’t been matched since.  Perhaps it was in the simplicity.  A woman sitting in an empty room with a device on her head that resembled a reverse bear trap.  If she didn’t dig the key out of the flesh of the groaning man lying next to her, the trap would snap apart, taking her jaws with it.  The red band trailer summed things up thusly »

New Paranormal Activity 3 Trailer Takes You Back To The 80s

28 September 2011 2:03 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

It was only a few years back that studios were nervous about launching scary movies on Halloween because they couldn't compete with the enormously successful Saw franchise. Then in 2009 a small budget, found-footage film called Paranormal Activity tried to play the David and Goliath game and actually managed to beat Saw VI, despite being in its third week of release by the time Saw came out. Thus was born the new franchise-owner of Halloween and for the third year in a row we now have another Paranormal Activity movie coming our way, which now has a new trailer. Check it out below or in HD over on Apple. Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel to the last two films that explores the first encounter Katie and Kristi have with the demon that has haunted them their entire lives. The movie was directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the directors »

Sacrifice starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Christian Slater will be hitting store shelves on DVD, Blu-ray and also digital download on April 26th. I've seen this movie already and it's actually pretty good, just picture Cuba Gooding Jr. as a bad-ass, revenge set guy with excellent marksmanship and then you have Slater (Rip) who actually is in the role of a do gooder priest! The movie has some really cool action scenes and plenty of gun fire. Anyway watch the new clip titled Confrontation at the Church below!

Plot:

After a fatal crime is committed upon his wife and daughter, tough undercover cop John Hebron (Oscar® Winner Cuba Gooding Jr.American Gangster, Jerry Maguire, Pearl Harbor) struggles to forgive himself for being unable to save them.  Plagued by the past, he turns to the counsel of Father Porter (Christian Slater, “The Forgotten,” Bobby, True Romance) who has recently experienced his »

Friday Report: 'Rio' Takes First, 'Scream 4' Gets Few Calls

16 April 2011 2:29 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

On Friday, business wasn't quite what it was cracked up to be as the two new major releases, Rio and Scream 4, failed to excite moviegoers. Friday was still slightly up from the same day last year. Rio led with an estimated $10.2 million on approximately 6,400 screens at 3,826 locations, and its 3D presentations at 2,591 locations accounted for close to 60 percent of the gross. Its opening day was less than Hop's $11.5 million start earlier this month, but a bit higher than Rango's $9.6 million last month. Those two movies each wound up with opening weekends close to $38 million. Rio also trailed How to Train Your Dragon ($12.1 million) from last spring, and it paled compared to the previous Blue Sky movies Ice Age, Robots and Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!. Evidently the Scream franchise was played out long ago, judging by the returns for Scream 4. The horror sequel notched an estimated »
