Netflix’s ‘6 Balloons’ Trailer: Abbi Jacobson is Desperate to Help Her Drug-Addicted Brother, Dave Franco — Exclusive
Abbi Jacobson has lately spent off-weeks from Comedy Central’s “Broad City” giving dramatic, festival-friendly performances. Last year she co-starred in the Sundance premiere “Person to Person” alongside Michael Cera and Tavi Gevinson. This week she was at SXSW for the debut screening of “6 Balloons,” a forthcoming Netflix feature from writer-director Marja-Lewis Ryan.

While organizing a surprise party for her boyfriend, Katie (Jacobson) discovers that her brother Seth (Dave Franco) has relapsed on heroin. After she’s unable to place him at a local rehab facility, Katie spends an agonizing night watching and distracting his young daughter, as Seth tags along with worsening withdrawal. Seven-time Emmy nominee Jane Kaczmarek plays their mother. The actors were cast in October 2016.

Franco previously brought “21 Jump Street,” “Neighbors,” and “The Disaster Artist” to SXSW, where Netflix is currently presenting five titles. His “6 Balloons” turn is inspired by real-life experiences of the film’s co-producer,

How ‘Blockers’ Brings a Feminist Twist to the Prom Sex Comedy

How ‘Blockers’ Brings a Feminist Twist to the Prom Sex Comedy
After launching “21 Jump Street,” “Neighbors” and “Trainwreck,” South by Southwest has a proven track record for catapulting studio comedies into the mainstream. And now, it looks like the Austin festival has another hit on its hands. “Blockers,” a sweet and raunchy coming-of-age story, played through the roof at the Paramount Theater on Saturday night, met with spontaneous laughter and cheers. Judging by the strong reviews, Universal Pictures can probably count on a box-office home run when the movie opens on April 6.

“Blockers” is like “American Pie” meets “Bridesmaids.” It follows a group of three teenagers (played by the winning Geraldine Viswanathan, Kathryn Newton and Gideon Adlon), who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. This isn’t a unique premise. But it’s never been told from high school girls’ point of view with a female director behind the camera. And the story doesn’t focus

Emily Blunt, John Krasinski Scare SXSW With ‘A Quiet Place’

Emily Blunt, John Krasinski Scare SXSW With ‘A Quiet Place’
On Friday night, John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” premiered at South By Southwest to enough shrieks inside the theater to please its director.

Judging by a healthy smattering of applause, the supernatural thriller passed the Austin litmus test for an opening-night film. That could be a good sign for Paramount Pictures’ scheduled April release, as SXSW has proven a launching pad for studio films ranging from “21 Jump Street” to “Baby Driver.”

“I’ve never been a genre guy,” said Krasinski at a Q&A after the screening, standing beside his cast. So why did he direct and star in it?

“Emily”— he said, referring to his wife, Emily Blunt, who also plays his wife in the movie — “and I had just had our second daughter. I was already in the world of pure terrified. I thought, ‘Why not put it in a movie?’”

A Quiet Place” follows a

Men in Black Spin-Off Begins Shooting This Summer

Whether you want to call it Men in Black 4 or a spin-off, Sony's next installment in the popular series is moving forward rather quickly. And is now reportedly set to start filming this summer. The Men in Black franchise has been reliable for Sony over the years, but following the release of Men in Black 3 in 2012, they've seemed a bit unsure of the direction to take it. Now, with a director and star seemingly in place, they're looking to get the franchise back on track and aim to have cameras rolling on the new installment this June.

We recently reported that Thor: Ragnarok star Chris Hemsworth is being eyed by Sony to lead this upcoming Men in Black spin-off. While his deal hasn't been finalized as of this writing (as far as we know), it looks like he's going to be one of the new faces of the franchise now.

Untitled Men in Black Reboot/Spinoff (2019)

A Jurassic World-style relaunch of the Men in Black franchise. Sony explored different ways of continuing the Men in Black series following the release of Men in Black 3, including crossing it over with the 21 Jump Street property. The studio ultimately announced in September 2017 that it would be releasing a spinoff/reboot of the franchise instead.

Men in Black Spin-Off Closes in on Chris Hemsworth

Men in Black Spin-Off Closes in on Chris Hemsworth
Chris Hemsworth has entered negotiations to star in Sony's highly-anticipated Men in Black spin-off, news which comes just a month after The Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Gray came aboard to take the helm. This new report also reveals that the story will be set in London, centering on a trio of new characters including a "white character, a black woman and an older man." While it seems likely that Chris Hemsworth will be playing the, "white character," no further details about this character were given.

Sony's approach to this project is said to be similar to Universal's approach to their 2015 blockbuster Jurassic World, which brought in new characters to the world established in the 1993 classic Jurassic Park. This Men in Black spin-off will not feature Will Smith's Agent J or Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K, but the movie will continue to build off

Chris Hemsworth is in Talks To Join The New Men In Black Film

A few weeks ago we learned that Straight Outta Compton and Fate of the Furious director F. Gary Grey was in talks to direct the new Men in Black film at Sony Pictures. Well, according to Variety, he is officially on board to direct and Chris Hemsworth is in talks to star in the film!

According to the report, Hemsworth would play one of the new agents in the spinoff. I like Hemsworth, so for his sake, I hope this new Men in Black film turns out good and not like that unfortunate Ghostbusters reboot.

There's no information on what this next installment of the franchise will be about, but we do know for a fact that it will not include Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, who starred in the original films. The script for the film comes from Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway and Art Marcum.

Chris Hemsworth In Talks for Men In Black Spinoff

  • Cinelinx
One of Hollywood's biggest stars could be donning the trademark suit and tie, accompanied by the neuralizer, as Chris Hemsworth is being eyed to play the lead in Sony's Men in Black spin-off!  More within...

After Will Smith's trilogy of movies, alongside Tommy Lee Jones (for the most part), Sony took a break from producing any more Men in Black films.  Then, last year, talk surfaced about the idea to merge Men in Black with 21 Jump Street.  Thankfully, that confusing idea was tabled, but that didn't stop Sony from moving forward with plans for a spin-off.

With Director F. Gary Gray in the fold, Sony is eyeing a superstar to lead the Men in Black franchise in a new direction, namely Chris Hemsworth.  If accepted, Hemsworth will be joining a franchise sans the faces of the original trilogy, as Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones have decided not to reprise their roles.

Chris Hemsworth Eyes ‘Men in Black’ Spinoff

Chris Hemsworth Eyes ‘Men in Black’ Spinoff
Chris Hemsworth is in early talks to star in Sony’s “Men in Black” spin-off, sources confirmed to Variety.

F. Gary Gray, who previously helmed “Straight Outta Compton” and “The Fate of the Furious,” is on board to direct.

Hemsworth would play one of the new agents in the spinoff. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles in the film, which is meant to launch a new franchise with fresh talent.

The studio fast-tracked the project earlier this fall, setting Matt Holloway and Art Marcum to pen the script and dating a May 17, 2019 release.

The original movie followed Smith and Jones, who played agents of a secret organization, known as the Men in Black, and protected Earth from intergalactic bad guys. The first film was huge hit and produced two more sequels.

Sony had originally planned on combining the “Men in Black” and “21 Jump Street” franchises, but have since

Captain Marvel Movie Trailer, Cast, Every Update You Need To Know

Captain Marvel is Marvel’s first female-led superhero film as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, casting an actress in the role of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, was a long and arduous process, just as it was casting every other major character in the McU. A number of actresses vied and tested for the role, but it eventually went to Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson (Room, 21 Jump Street), who officially joined the shared universe in 2016.

Liev Schreiber talks Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse animated movie

Following Peter Parker’s exploits in Marvel StudiosAvengers: Infinity War, Sony will be passing the baton to Miles Morales later this year for the animated movie Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film will see X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Liev Schreiber making his return to the Marvel universe as he lends his voice to the film’s as-yet-unrevealed villain, and speaking to Collider, Schreiber has been hyping the project and its animators.

“It was actually the animation team,” said Schreiber when asked what drew him to the project. “The guys who are working on it, I saw their work and said, ‘Wow! These guys are special.’ And it is. It’s going to be pretty special, from what I’ve seen so far. And I haven’t seen much, but it’s pretty special. They’re super-talented. … That’s what I love about it. But it also is anamorphic … ohh

Hannah Simone is new Greatest American Hero, but will reboot be as entertaining as the original?

A few weeks ago it was announced that ABC was to remake the hit 1981 series The Greatest American Hero with a new female lead. Earlier this week it was announced that Hannah Simone is the chosen one to don the tight red lycra costume and strut her stuff to the cheesy theme song. For those who are not in the know, The Greatest American Hero was a superhero comedy devised by the late Stephen J. Cannell who would go on to create such shows as The A-Team and 21 Jump Street to name a few. The original series starred...read more

Rachel Weisz Doesn’t Want Female James Bond Because Women “Should Get Their Own Stories”

Before Daniel Craig officially announced his return for the untitled Bond 25, it seemed every male actor under the sun (see: Chris Hemsworth, Idris Elba, et cetera) was linked with the supposedly vacant role of 007.

Among those mooted reports were one or two rumors of a female-fronted reboot, as well, one which would have welcomed an actress like Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) into the ranks of MI6. It would certainly play into the whole gender-swapping craze that has gripped Hollywood in recent years, resulting in such projects as Ocean’s 8 and Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters, along with mooted female-flipped reboots of The Nice Guys and 21 Jump Street.

But when it comes to James Bond, in particular, Rachel Weisz (real-life partner to current 007, Daniel Craig) disputed the idea of a female-led reboot on the belief that “women should have their own stories.”

Why not create your own story rather than

Hasbro's Action Man Movie Gets Muppets Director James Bobin

Hasbro's Action Man Movie Gets Muppets Director James Bobin
The Action Man movie is on like Donkey Kong, with The Muppets director James Bobin set to helm the project. The movie was first talked about as a movie back in 2012 when Emmett/Furla Films secured the rights from Hasbro. Additionally, movies for Monopoly and Hungry Hungry Hippos were to be made, but none of those projects ever got off of the ground. Monopoly was supposed to be the first of the Hasbro movies to start production in 2013, but was later announced again in 2015.

Action Man is being written by Paddington 2 scribe Simon Farnaby, which is promising for the project along with James Bobin. The solid partnership will bring England's answer to America's G.I. Joe to the big screen. No release date has been set and the movie is said to be in the very early stages of pre-production. It will be interesting to see what kind of demand

Ron Howard Won’t Say How Much Of Solo: A Star Wars Story He Directed

Ron Howard is playing coy about how much of Solo: A Star Wars Story he directed, following Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s departure from the anthology film last summer. The directing duo, who are known for writing and directing comedies such as 21 Jump Street and The Lego Movie, were originally attached to being Han Solo’s origin story to life on the big screen for Lucasfilm. But in the wake of numerous creative differences, the pair exited the project with only three weeks of principal photography left on the schedule.

The Test of Time: Why Groundhog Day is a Comedy Classic that will never age

  • HeyUGuys
Author: Matt Rodgers

As our own radio alarm clock ticks over to 2018, with its digital display and the latest tune from an interchangeable pop star blaring from the speakers, it’s worth taking stock of the comedy landscape. A baron wasteland full of recycled formula and man-child shtick, in which admittedly there have been genre-defining breakouts, such as The Hangover, that have inspired limp sequels and imitations, or rare gems in the form of What We Do in the Shadows and 21 Jump Street.

In order to find some genuine laughs, here at HeyUGuys we’re turning back the clock to 1993, setting our alarm for 6:00am, and getting ready to be driven to breaking point by Sonny & Cher with comedy masterpiece Groundhog Day, which is released on 4K Ultra HD today. Altogether now, “They say we’re young and we don’t know, we won’t find out until

F. Gary Gray, director of Straight Outta Compton and this past year’s Fast and Furious 8, is being lined up by Sony Pictures to reboot the Men In Black series.

The news comes via Deadline who say that Gray is now officially in negotiations to helm the movie, which is written by Iron Man scribes Matt Holloway & Art Marcum. The film is a go project at the studio, but sources say that neither Will Smith or Tommy Lee Jones, who both starred in the first three movies, will return for more action.

The trade blog reiterates that this movie is not the 21 Jump Street crossover that still remains in active development.

'Fate of the Furious' Director Touted for 'Men in Black' Spin-off

Here come the Men in Black… again. Everyone’s favorite alien-monitoring agency will see a spin-off film in 2019. We last saw the sunglasses-wearing, neuralyzer-wielding gents in Men in Black 3 (2012), which came out a whole decade after Men in Black II. This new installment is separate from the previously reported crossover with 21 Jump Street, a mashup that may never see the light of day. According to Deadline, Sony and Amblin are in negotiations with F. Gary Gray (above on the set of The Italian Job) to helm the spin-off, who has directed back-to-back successes for Universal. The hot streak began with Straight Outta Compton in 2015. He followed that up with The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in the ongoing action saga and the 12th top grossing film of...
