Michael C. Hall (l.) and Sam Shepard get down to business in Cold in July.

Michael C. Hall (TV’s Dexter), Sam Shepard (Mud) and Don Johnson (A Good Old Fashioned Orgy), arguably the manliest celluloid trio of the year, star in the Southern film noir thriller Cold in July.

While investigating noises in his house one balmy Texas night in 1989, Richard Dane (Hall) puts a bullet in the brain of lowlife burglar Freddy. Although he’s hailed as a small-town hero, Richard soon finds himself fearing for his family’s safety when Freddy’s ex-con father, Ben (Shepard), rolls into town, hell-bent on revenge. But not all is as it seems in this seemingly peaceful community, and soon Richard’s life begins to unravel into a dark underworld of corruption and violence that will pit him against the most unlikely of foes. »

Variety’s 2014 Breakthrough Actor Winner: Will Forte

6 January 2014 10:00 AM, PST | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Variety Breakthrough of the Year Awards, which recognizes a select group of rising stars in entertainment and technology, will be held Jan. 9 at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Will Forte is your classic late bloomer.

The 43-year-old actor and writer, who’s enjoying the best reviews of his career as Bruce Dern’s long-suffering son in Alexander Payne’s “Nebraska,” admits he’s “sometimes actually pretty surprised” to have bloomed at all.

“I followed my dad into finance initially,” says the Northern California native. “I didn’t even start acting till I was 32.” But after cutting his teeth at improv troupe the Groundlings, Forte didn’t waste any more time.

“My first writing job was at MTV, then I worked for David Letterman, and then in 2002 I got ‘Saturday Night Live,’ which was huge in terms of both the comedy and acting,” he says.
