Syria, 1937: Hercule Poirot is one of several people present at an archaeological dig to find the skull of St John the Baptist, led by the exuberant Lord Boynton and his loyal son Leonard. The enterprise has been financed by Boynton's rich, rude and overbearing American wife. She bullies her three adopted children, Carol, Jinny and Raymond, as well as the family's nanny. Sarah King, a young English doctor, falls for Raymond and would love to tear him from his mother's apron-strings, and another doctor, Dr Gerard, takes an interest in Jinny, as does a Polish nun, who, with Jinny, is subject to an attack - by white slavers, according to the independent travel-writer Dame Celia Westholme. A mysterious young American, Jefferson Cope, whose link to the Boyntons seems tenuous, completes the group. Only his Lordship has any love for his wife so that, when she is found stabbed to death one blisteringly hot afternoon, Poirot has more than his fair share of suspects to interrogate. This is the most awful Agatha Christie "adaptation" I've ever seen
21 February 2010 | by (Hungary) – See all my reviews

I agree with all real Agatha Christie fans who say that this movie were awful. It is, even though I adore David Suchet as Poirot. But I agree with the reviewer who said that Suchet should have had to refuse the role in such an awful movie. Besides the awful storyline, I wasn't happy with the actress who played Mrs. Boyton as well. She was not authentic, I didn't become afraid of her, and I didn't feel this immense fear which a good thriller can make someone feel. And, the original fiction is really thriller-like. And, the two murders' suicide at the end wasn't authentic as well. So, dreadful all in all. I am also perplexed by the fact that the Agatha Christie Society hadn't protested against it. And, I also agree: DO NOT BUY or RENT it! And, if you watched it on TV, try to forget it and read the original fiction instead.
