Robert Downey Jr. Rumored To Be Getting Lifts For Iron Man 3

29 December 2011 5:09 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Prior to 2008, nobody would have ever guessed that Robert Downey Jr. would be turned into an action star. Standing only 5'8" and possessing a skinny frame, Downey Jr. lacked the giant muscles and height that most major action stars possess. Still, the star was brilliant in his turn as a Marvel superhero in both Iron Man and Iron Man 2 (though, to be fair, the suit does most of the heavy lifting in those movies) so nobody really seemed to notice. I'd say that will probably continue in Iron Man 3, but there's also the possibility that Rdj might be getting a bit of a height boost. Sources at Us Weekly (via The New York Post) say that Robert Downey Jr. might be getting a specially-designed pair of insoles for his next turn as Iron Man following The Avengers. Said the source, who goes unnamed, "They're working on a special »

29 December 2011 4:56 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Cinema ticket revenues in the world's largest movie market fell 3.5% in 2011 despite success of blockbuster sequels

Us box office takings fell to a 16-year low in 2011 despite the success of blockbusters such as the latest in the Transformers, Twilight and Harry Potter series.

Ticket revenue in the world's largest movie market fell 3.5% to $10.2bn, while the estimated number of tickets sold dropped 4.4% to 1.28bn, the lowest figure since 1995's 1.26bn, according to box office tracker Hollywood.com. Tentpole movies that provided disappointing returns for studios this year included sci-fi-western mashup Cowboys & Aliens, animated anthropomorphic penguin sequel Happy Feet 2 and Ben Stiller/Eddie Murphy comedy thriller Tower Heist.

No animated film or comic book movie topped $200m in 2011, in stark contrast to the previous year when Toy Story 3 broke the $1m mark and Iron Man 2 pulled in more than $600m. "There were a lot of high-profile movies that just »

Editorial: The Problem With Marvel Studios

28 December 2011 6:35 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

Hey all, I re-watched Captain America earlier, and thought to myself, this could have been sooo much better. Red Skull was one of the shittest villain's I've seen in a Cbm. It wasn't thought-provoking or anything. A good movie, nothing more. You're probably wondering why I'm talking trash about a good movie. I'd just like to address the Marvel Vs DC war for a sec, as it's how I need to start the Editorial. What people fail to realise is that there are 2 types of Cbm. There's the fun, action-orientated ones that aren't meant to make you think about themes and deeper meaning's. And there are the one's with all that. Some examples of the former are Thor, Iron Man 2, Captain America, X-Men and Spider-Man, while some examples of the latter are Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, X-Men: First Class and V for Vendetta. Obviously not everybody wants to »

'Game of Thrones' Director Alan Taylor Now Set to Helm 'Thor' Sequel

24 December 2011 12:27 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Before Monster director Patty Jenkins was brought on to direct Marvel's sequel to this year's blockbuster Thor (and ultimately stepped away from the project, much to the chagrin of star Natalie Portman) TV director Brian Kirk was in talks to helm the feature. But now Deadline reports a Alan Taylor, a different director who has worked on the same series as Kirk such as "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones," is in talks to direct the sequel written by the first film's co-writer Don Payne thus keeping it on track for its release on November 15th, 2013. Hopefully the quick rush to production won't hurt the film's quality. Marvel has had plenty of creative issues with directors like Jon Favreau (see Iron Man 2) and also with talent like Natalie Portman, Terrence Howard and Edward Norton. At times it seems like it's the talent being stingy, but it really seems like »

Robert Downey Jr. Explains Iron Man's Evolution Up To The Avengers And More!

23 December 2011 8:29 AM, PST | ComicBookMovie.com | See recent ComicBookMovie news »

The latest issue of FilmInk magazine has once again offered up word or two from one of the stars of Marvel's The Avengers movie. The actor behind the Armored Avenger Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. discusses the evolution of his character from two solo films up to the big superhero ensemble. And also revealing a nickname for a fellow Avenger, read on below! "In Iron Man, which was an origin story, he was his own epiphany and redemption of sorts," Downey offers. "Iron Man 2 is all about not being an island, and dealing with legacy issues and making space for others. There, he was a military machine. In The Avengers, he's throwing it down with the others," Downey Jr. assures. On facing Chris Hemsworth's Thor, Downey Jr. sums it up saying, "It's other-dimensional, and so that's the way that Tony think of this Loki-intergalactic-planetary-Beastie-Boys-son reality that happens in The Avengers. »

What Films Are Coming From Marvel Studios in 2014?

22 December 2011 11:51 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Marvel Studios has had a tough time keeping to their plan of two theatrical releases per year. Delays with Thor and The Avengers had Iron Man 2 release by itself in 2010 and next year, The Avengers is without a partner since Runaways was indefinitely postponed. For 2013 and 2014 however, it’s back to two films/year or… more.

Today, the news came from Disney that Marvel would be releasing The Avengers in 3D (post-converted), but that unsurprising news was padded with something far more interesting: Marvel Studios claiming another release date in 2014 to release one of their films earlier.

Up until now, the official slate of upcoming films from Marvel Studios was scheduled as follows:

2012

The Avengers (May 4) Runaways (canned)

2013

Iron Man 3 (May 3) Thor 2 (July 26 pushed back to November 15)

2014

Unknown (May 16) Unknown (June 27)

As ...

The Dark Knight Rises Trailer, Sweded Just For Kicks

22 December 2011 11:08 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Practically no one saw Michel Gondry's cheerful comedy Be Kind Rewind when it was first released in 2008, but it's managed to make a lasting cultural impact thanks to its invention of "sweding," which means remaking a movie or a trailer in the most low-budget, goofily homemade way. Sweding has exploded on the Internet, the place where you can become famous for filming yourself doing something in your backyard, and has become especially popular for trailers that everybody has watched. It happened with an Iron Man 2 trailer a while back, and now the latest Dark Knight Rises has gotten the sweding treatment. It doesn't look that great-- that's kind of the point-- but it is really inventive and funny, in a way that makes me even like the original trailer better. See what I mean below. There's something just inherently funny about seeing shots from inside Wayne Manor or »

Top 10 films of 2011: Super 8

20 December 2011 10:49 PM, PST | Den of Geek | See recent Den of Geek news »

What started off as a secret trailer before Iron Man 2 turned into one of 2011's best blockbusters. Caroline salutes Super 8...

Over the past few weeks, Den Of Geek writers have been voting for the films of the year. It's a democratic vote, which inevitably means that things end up in a slightly funny order that not one individual writer is likely to fully agree with. But it's still a fine list. Here's the latest entry...

8th place:

Super 8

One of the things 2011 might be remembered for is its move towards the nostalgic, with remake news breaking on an almost daily basis and a penchant for harking back to past film trends, even during the summer blockbuster season.

Super 8 certainly did the latter, as Jj Abrams paid tribute to the kind of science-fiction Spielberg made his own in the '70s and '80s, and it managed »

Top 10 films of 2011: Captain America: The First Avenger

It’s our seventh favourite movie of 2011. Here’s Mark to explain why Captain America: The First Avenger was such a great superhero film…

Over the past few weeks, Den Of Geek writers have been voting for the films of the year. It's a democratic vote, which inevitably means that things end up in a slightly funny order that not one individual writer is likely to fully agree with. But it's still a fine list. Here's entry number seven…

7th place:

Captain America: The First Avenger

In the run-up to next summer's long-touted superhero group-hug extravaganza, The Avengers, Marvel Studios has really learnt its lessons. After the sense of disappointment left by Iron Man 2, the next two pieces of the puzzle put far less emphasis on advertising the team-up, and much more into the establishment of the protagonists, and superhero stories that were interesting in their own right.
