The Thick of It: good news, minister, the show is over

26 October 2012 6:58 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The stars, writers and producers tell the story of the award-winning political satire which made a household name of spin doctor Malcolm Tucker and ends on Saturday

Award-winning political satire The Thick Of It comes to an end on BBC2 on Saturday. The show, which made foul-mouthed spin doctor Malcolm Tucker a household name first appeared on BBC4 seven years ago. Here we look back on the origins of the show, its big-screen spin-off, and how it became part of the political lexicon.

Armando Iannucci had already made The Day Today and I'm Alan Partridge, with Steve Coogan, when he was inspired to create The Thick Of it after arguing the case for Yes Minister in a 2004 Best British Sitcom poll for BBC2. It was commissioned for an initial three-part run by BBC4.

McGregor and Hudson Topline Capaldi Backstage Comedy 'Born To Be King'

18 October 2012 11:50 AM, PDT | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »

Scottish writer-director-actor Peter Capaldi ("In the Loop") has landed Ewan McGregor and is in talks with Kate Hudson to star in his mistaken identity comedy "Born To Be King." The film will shoot at Pinewood Studios in January. Indomina's Stephanie Denton is handling foreign sales at the American Film Market. McGregor will play dual roles as an extra who resembles a major movie star during the shooting of a period film. Hudson would play a starlet who has issues with the star but likes the extra. Capaldi, who won an Oscar for his short film "Franz Kafka’s It’s A Wonderful Life," promises a film that is "artful and magical" and "entertaining." Los Angeles producer Dan Lupovitz, who has been nurturing the project for two years, calls Capaldi's orginal screenplay a "full out bells and whistles comedy." McGregor and Capaldi have been compatriots and pals for years, and Hudson was Capaldi's. »

Spoiler Alert: This weekly blog is for those who are watching The Thick of It series four. Don't read on if you haven't seen episode five.

Lines of the week – episode four

And now for the fallout. Mr Tickle's death has shaken both government and opposition – the press are clamouring for Peter Mannion's resignation, and Nicola Murray has already lost her job – which means that The Thick of It has a perfect chance to play around in the mess. For the first time this series, tonight's episode was equally interested in all parties, as everyone slipped and skidded around, unsuccessfully trying to save their own skins.

30 September 2012 4:21 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Currently in its fourth season, the hilarious British political comedy The Thick of It, set in the corridors of British government, can now be seen unedited on Hulu with new episodes every Sunday, along with the first three seasons. From executive producer/writer/director Armando Iannucci (In The Loop), the show stars Peter Capaldi, Roger Allam, Rebecca Front, Vincent Franklin, Geoffrey Streatfield, Will Smith, Olivia Poulet, James Smith, Joanna Scanlan, Ben Willbond, Chris Addison and Rebecca Gethings. During this recent exclusive interview with Collider, show creator Armando Iannucci talked about how the arrangement with Hulu came about, how happy he is with the fact that the show can be viewed unedited (without all the bleeping for the often foul language) and the day after it airs on BBC, why politics are inherently comic, what originally inspired the series, how surprised he is with the hugely positive reaction, the transition and »

25 September 2012 12:00 PM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

We are bringing it today with a master class in podcasting greatness. We didn't get into the Fall Box Office Challenge as there are still only two releases on the board and one is still in relatively limited release. I have updated the numbers and have them below, but it won't really be until October that things are really going to start picking up. As always, I have broken down this episode on a minute-by-minute basis if you would like to skip ahead and below I have featured the information on how to download the podcast, find us on iTunes or merely just listen in your browser. »

James Gandolfini & Steve Carell Reteam for 'The Bone Men' Comedy

25 September 2012 8:37 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Paleontology got more screams than laughs in Jurassic Park, but the dinosaur digging profession is about to get the comedy treatment. Showbiz 411 has word that Steve Carell and James Gandolfini, who will be seen together in The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, will team up again for a comedy called The Bone Men. Carell's Carousel Productions is behind the film which sees the two actors playing a pair of paleontologists from the late 1800s. Seems like a strange setting for a comedy, but with these two on board, my interest is at least piqued for now. However, there's no word on how soon this project might get off the ground. Read on! Gandolfini does say "It's very funny," so that's a solid endorsement for a comedy, especially since he hasn't done a straight-up comedy since In the Loop. Word on the street is Fox 2000 and HBO are interested in the film, »

James Gandolfini Developing Comedy The Bone Men With Steve Carell

24 September 2012 2:27 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

James Gandolfini has been in a few comedies over the course of his career, with roles in movies like Get Shorty, In The Loop, and Surviving Christmas, but they are hardly what he's known for. Thanks to his enormous stature, he has made a career out of playing mafiosos and muscle men, most notably during six seasons of The Sopranos, but now he's apparently ready to make people laugh again. Showbiz 411 recently caught up with Gandolfini at a big HBO gala and learned that the actor is currently developing a new comedy with Steve Carell called The Bone Men. Set up at Carell's production company, the movie will reportedly feature the two actors as paleontologists working in the late 1800s. Apparently Fox 2000 and HBO are already interested in the project, which Gandolfini simply described as "very funny." But while that film may be in the earliest stages of development, it »

TV Review: Brilliant, Razor-Sharp ‘The Thick of It’ Returns to Hulu

9 September 2012 6:51 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – Should this even be called a “TV Review”? Will we one day write “Hulu Reviews”? Or “Streaming Reviews”? Technically, “The Thick of It” is still a TV show as it premieres in the U.K. on the old-fashioned platform. It’s just in the United States that Armando Iannucci’s brilliant political comedy is premiering exclusively on Hulu and Hulu Plus. And it’s just as razor-sharp and incredibly clever as fans know it to be. The rest of you, those who may come to this because you liked “In the Loop” or HBO’s “Veep,” prepare yourself for one of the best comedies on, well, TV.

Television Rating: 4.5/5.0

It’s going to take major shows like this one (and the exclusive return of “Arrested Development” to Netflix) to really change people’s expectations of Hulu as a destination for not just catch-up and repeats but originals. And make no mistake. »

TV Review: The Thick of It: Coalition – Episode 1

9 September 2012 1:19 AM, PDT | Obsessed with Film | See recent Obsessed with Film news »

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Well, it was a long time coming, but everyone’s favourite political comedy (I loathe the word satire) is back, and it was worth the wait. Perhaps it was my fault for expecting to see Malcolm Tucker and the now-opposition that I didn’t think of it as a total classic, but it was absolutely hilarious. Nothing has changed- the writing is just as sharp, the performances and dialogue just as memorable, and we still have total idiots in control both on-screen and off. Perhaps it was my fault for expected some fluent Scottish profanity in a series with the subtitle ‘Coalition’. But this is just a niggle- It made me wish we’d seen more of this undisclosed party in previous series and In The Loop.

What could have been a clichéd plot, with an attempt to get comment on politicians desperately trying and failing »

The Thick Of It Season 4 Will Debut On Hulu In September

6 September 2012 9:32 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

If you haven’t heard of The Thick of It then I wouldn’t be surprised. Despite the modest success of the film spin off: In the Loop and the critical adulation that has been heaped upon it, Armando Iannucci’s terrific political sitcom has failed to make its way across the Atlantic until recently. And as the fourth season is set to begin over in the UK, Hulu announces that they will stream the new episodes of the show only a day after they air across the pond.

For those not familiar, The Thick of It is set inside the British corridors of power mainly focussing on the fictional goverment department DoSAC (Department of Social Affairs & Citizenship) where the hapless employees are overseen by the fiery spin doctor Malcolm Tucker, who attempts to right all their political blunders. It is an impressively sweary satire and has become famous for »

Watch: First Trailer For New Season Of 'The Thick Of It' Debuts

Sadly, most of us have never seen "The Thick of It," Armando Iannucci's political satire that is about to enter its fourth season on British television. But we have seen the theatrical spin-off, "In the Loop," and almost peed ourselves with laughter. Plus, some of us are huge fans of Iannucci's stateside series "Veep," which just finished its freshman season on HBO (it'll be back next year). So, while we're not entirely sure what's going on in this 30-second clip for the new season of "The Thick of It," subtitled "Coalition," we still find ourselves giggling a little bit. The clip, via Bleeding Cool, shows a lot of British people yelling in offices, among them Roger Allam from "V for Vendetta" (and, um, "Speed Racer"), and a brief clip of our favorite F-bomb-dropping spin doctor Malcolm Tucker (Peter Capaldi), who gets to make a funny joke about yoga. HBO Remaking Brit Medical Comedy 'Getting On'

15 August 2012 8:21 AM, PDT | Indiewire Television | See recent Indiewire Television news »

Not terribly well-known even in its native UK, “Getting On” has certainly been a hit with British critics. Airing on niche channel BBC4 (that’s why it's little seen and little known) the sitcom has aired for two seasons and a total of nine episodes since 2009 and follows the medical staff on a women’s geriatric extended care wing at a run-down hospital. Created by and starring Jo Brand (who won a BAFTA for her performance), Joanna Scanlon and Vicki Pepperdine, the Peter Capaldi (“In The Loop”)-directed show has a third season in the works. But not only that, "Getting On" now has an unlikely U.S. remake in the works over at HBO thanks to “Big Love” creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer who were attracted to the comic but compassionate BBC series for a number of reasons. “When we proposed the reformat to BBC Worldwide and HBO, »
